Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre ist ein klassischer Bildungsroman von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Der wegweisende Entwicklungsroman erschien 1795/96. Er besteht aus acht Büchern, von denen sich die ersten fünf inhaltlich an das zu Goethes Lebzeiten unveröffentlichte Fragment Wilhelm Meisters theatralische Sendung anlehnen. Ein Vergleich beider Texte zeigt etliche wörtliche Übereinstimmungen. Handlung/Übersicht: 1.-5. Buch: Der junge Wilhelm Meister will Theatermann werden, scheitert aber nach beachtlichen Erfolgen schließlich doch. 6. Buch: Bekenntnisse einer schönen Seele: Ein junges Mädchen entdeckt die Liebe, emanzipiert sich, macht sich sowohl mit naturwissenschaftlichem als auch mit musischem und spirituellem Wissen vertraut, wendet sich ganz Gott zu und wird zu einer schönen Seele, indem es eine ganz persönliche, natürliche Religiosität entwickelt und schließlich zur wohltätigen und gläubigen Frau reift, die unter dem Namen „schöne Seele“ auch als handelnde Person auftritt. 7.-8. Buch: Wilhelm verlässt die Bretter, die die Welt bedeuten, und findet Anschluss an eine Loge, die soziale Veränderungen anstrebt und der die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika zum Vorbild dienen: „Hier oder nirgend ist Amerika!“
