Story
We live in an upside-down culture. We wink at our vices as coping strategies while restricting our virtues to our online personas, where they won't interfere with our real lives. And we wonder why we feel empty, exhausted, and directionless. But why do we do things that we know are harmful for us? Jonathan "JP" Pokluda wants you to know there's a better, more fulfilling way to live, and it doesn't involve looking inside yourself for the answers—because that's not where you'll find them.

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. Everyone wants to be loved - to find someone who will stick with them through all of life's ups and downs, someone who is in it for the long haul. But in a world where dating is increasingly based on split-second decisions and geared toward casual relationships rather than marriage, it's easy for single people to feel discouraged, used, or unworthy of true love. Jonathan "JP" Pokluda wants to dispel the myths, misconceptions, and fairy tales you've believed about dating and replace them with the truth from the One who invented marriage and created you to crave a relationship.

Yet it is a fight in which our King has won the decisive victory! You have been set free…into a raging battle! We are at war. Not with a foreign government or domestic terrorists or a creepy new artificial intelligence hell-bent on taking over the world. No, it’s a war we feel deep inside our own chests: we are at war with lies. The problem isn’t so much that we tell lies but that we live them. We let them into our bodies, and they sabotage our peace.

If God is holy, then he can’t sin. If God can’t sin, then he can’t sin against you. If he can’t sin against you, shouldn’t that make him the most trustworthy being there is? Best-selling author Jackie Hill Perry, in her much anticipated follow-up to Gay Girl, Good God, helps us find the reason we don’t trust God - we misunderstand his holiness. In Holier Than Thou, Jackie walks us through Scripture, shaking the dust off of “holy” as we’ve come to know it and revealing it for what it really is: good news.

Publisher's summary
Free yourself from anxiety by discovering and applying principles given by God to lead us away from panic and toward peace.
“These pages will feel like a lifeline for the anxious, overwhelmed, and burned out.” (Jennie Allen, New York Times best-selling author of Get Out of Your Head)
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by panic, fear, worry, or anxiety, you’re not alone. A part of the human experience often involves anxious feelings that paralyze us, keep us up at night, rob us of our ability to live in the moment, and pretty much suck the life out of us. But this doesn’t have to be the case. You can stop freaking out.
Sound too good to be true? It is true. In fact, it’s a promise from God himself.
At least 366 times, the Bible commands us to not fear. God loves us and doesn’t want us to be ruled by anxiety. Not surprisingly, most people don’t understand what the Bible actually teaches about anxiety, fear, and worry.
Consider this book a practical resource to help you connect the dots between your anxiety and what God has to say about defeating it. As you are about to discover, you really can stop freaking out.

The label "not enough" seems to be stamped across everything you do - and yet parenting is the one thing you want most to get right. What if the solution is simply to embrace the truth that you are not enough - but God is?

There are many things that seem normal or average today that at one point in time seemed absolutely crazy. Smartphones, Wi-Fi, and even the electric light bulb were all groundbreaking, history-making inventions that started out as crazy ideas. Our see-it-to-believe-it generation tends to have a hard time exercising true faith - one that steps out, takes action, and sees mountain-moving results. Many of us would rather play it safe and stand on the sidelines, but it’s crazy faith that helps us see God move and reveals His promises.

"Over the last four decades, I've met one-on-one with thousands of men. Most of them know that Jesus promised "a rich and satisfying life" (John 10:10), but too many are confused about what that looks like. In fact, I'd estimate that 90 percent of Christian men lead lukewarm, stagnant, defeated lives—and they hate it. When men try to put into words what's holding them back, they invariably describe one or more of seven symptoms. But you can experience a powerful life transformed by Christ. I'll tell you how." I’d recommend this book for anyone struggling with stress or anxiety, but particularly young adults. David provides real world advice that’s practical, tested and rooted in truth. He’s also fun to listen to because his energy, personality, knowledge and passion really come through. I didn’t expect a book about anxiety to be fun, but this one really was!

For Those Struggling with Anxiety re: Singleness
So, let me start off by saying that I absolutely love listening to David on the Porch and on his podcast. I'm a single mother in my mid-30's, have been divorced for a decade now, and frankly--enjoy the prospect of staying perpetually single. I don't date, and while I get that this is a source of pining and worry from many around my age, it just isn't for me.
So. I checked out the book thinking it would address a variety of topics related to anxiety and the like (as the title would imply), since my daughter (14) struggles with it a bit, I certainly have my moments raising two teenagers by myself (who wouldn't), and heck--maybe there were some other areas in here I should consider.
However, I felt like the content constantly came back around to David's strong suit, which is: relationships. Occasionally he touches on other topics like finances and throws in a brief mention about the effects of modern technology at the beginning, but... it really continues to circle back to the idea of anxiety in the context of relationships. Now, I think that's great and helpful--absolutely useful for people needing solid, godly advice about approaching and dealing with anxiety related to interpersonal and intimate relationships. In fact, it felt like an extended sermon on the very topic (I literally breezed through this within a 24-hr period.)
But... I'd recommend a title rename if that's going to be the primary focus. Because I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book to just anyone dealing with anxiety. I think it'd be minimally helpful in that regard and they'd find all the relationship advice somewhat distracting if that's not what they're struggling with. Rather, I'd reserve my recommendation for those specifically dealing with anxiety related to being single.
So, if you're looking for a spiritually sound book focused on the anxieties associated with being single in today's world, this is the book for you! David Marvin is most definitely an entertaining speaker/narrator, and will most assuredly hold your attention throughout the entirety of this read. However, if this isn't really where you're at in life and you're looking for something to address other sources of anxiety... well, it's only a 6hr listen on Audible so it's up to you how you want to use those 6hrs. There are still some good nuggets in there to take away and you definitely won't be bored!🤔😬🤓

Highly recommend! Not just for those who struggle with anxiety
Truly a great book! Loved listening to it but also want to purchase a physical copy to be able to take notes. David goes through a lot of great content and it’s much more than “just a book on anxiety” it dives into a ton of other life aspects that have ripple affects within our spiritual and physical lives(joy, gratefulness, money, relationships, trauma, etc.). Highly recommend for all, even those who don’t struggle with anxiety consistently.

Incredible message and very helpful strategies for anxiety. I would recommend paperback over audio, but either way a great book.

Incredibly Helpful
Such a fantastic look into how to deal with stress and anxiety in a biblical way. David is able to take very difficult concepts and simplify them and bring humor to difficult situations. Well worth your time even if you feel like you have read every book out there on anxiety, this has a fresh perspective for you to allow the Holy Spirit to convict and encourage your heart. Fantastic book!

To boldy go... where no man... has gone before...
I'm a huge fan of all things that come out of Watermark. I've even enjoyed listening to David preach. However, I'm having a hard time listening to this audio book. I've never noticed it in his preaching but this audio book is absolutely filled with Shatneresk verbal pauses and it's making it very hard to listen to. The material alone is good stuff though.
