Publisher's summary
During a weekend retreat, a powerful family plays a dangerous game of dark secrets and cold-blooded ambition in a novel by Kaira Rouda, USA Today bestselling author of Beneath the Surface.
Under the direction of the Kingsleys’ new president, Paige, the family has gathered for a weekend retreat at a luxurious Laguna Beach resort.
Still clinging to the hope of succession are the sons of Richard Kingsley, the family patriarch and CEO: John, the oldest, who’s clawed his way back from a dark tragedy, and Paige’s estranged husband, Ted, the golden boy. When Richard’s ex and his wayward daughter join the fray, Paige finds herself with two fast allies. They know a secret that could shatter the family legacy. Call it leverage, call it revenge, the Kingsley women believe they have the upper hand.
But as the power games begin, greater threats than the howling Santa Ana winds are coming. Because this weekend, amid so much greed and betrayal, no Kingsley is safe. It’s family. Watch your back.
Critic reviews
“Rouda keeps the complications coming…Fans of lethal soap operas will be happy to know that a third season is on the way.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Kaira Rouda writes with such a fresh, engaging voice—she pulled me into this story from page one! I loved everything about Under the Palms: the secrets, power games, over-the-top luxury and complex characters. If you're looking for a delicious read, you need to pick up this book!”—Sarah Pekkanen, New York Times bestselling author of House of Glass
“The Kingsleys’ are back and just as devilishly devious as before. Under the Palms is a single-sitting, binge-worthy page-turner. I didn’t think this family’s behavior could get any more appalling, but Kaira Rouda delivers with whip sharp banter and morally gray characters bent on doing their worst, even if it’s murder. For anyone feeling a dry spell after Succession, snap up this book. It’s pure fun.”—Kerry Lonsdale, Wall Street Journal bestselling author

Story
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

Story
As they do each June, the Foxes have driven the winding roads of Appalachia to drop off their children for a two-week stay at their grandmother’s. Here, twelve-year-old Thea can run free and breathe in the smell of pine. But as her parents head back to suburban Virginia, they have no idea they’re about to cross paths with a ticking time bomb. Back in Kentucky, Thea and her grandmother Lucy both awaken from the same nightmare. And though the two have never discussed the special kind of sight they share, they know as soon as their tearful eyes meet that something terrible has happened.

5 stars, even better than the first in the series!
"Under the Palms" is a thrilling continuation of the Kingsley saga that had me captivated from the very first page. After devouring the first book, I eagerly awaited this sequel, and Kaira Rouda did not disappoint. She has firmly established herself as an auto-buy author for me, crafting narratives brimming with secrets, lies, and more backstabbing than you'd find in a courtroom drama.
The premise of a seemingly innocuous family weekend quickly transforms into a tense, suspenseful ordeal. With this family, you're never certain of your standing—or your safety. Rouda masterfully keeps readers guessing, and the twists and turns left me on the edge of my seat throughout.
The story is fantastic, weaving intricate plots that build up to a jaw-dropping reveal. While I had my suspicions, the final outcome was a twist I never saw coming, proving once again Rouda's knack for the unexpected. Fans of the show "Succession" will find much to enjoy in this tale of power, betrayal, and the dark underbelly of family dynamics.
