Publisher's summary

A dying planet. A desperate mission. A crew facing impossible odds. Humanity’s last hope lies with them….

Time is running out for the people of New Pallas. Nobody knows that better than Alvera Renata, a tenacious captain determined to scout past the stars with nothing but a handpicked crew and a promise: to find a new home for humanity. But when a perilous journey across dark space leads to first contact with a galactic civilization on the brink of war, Alvera soon realises keeping her word might not be as easy as she thought.

Her only hope lies with the secrets of the ancient alien waystations scattered across the galaxy. The mysterious technology could be the key to humanity’s survival—or bring unwanted attention from the long-forgotten beings who built them. But remaining united is a lot to ask from a crew already splintering under the weight of their differences.

A jaded pilot looks for a place he can start over. A young translator searches for meaning out in the galaxy’s lawless frontier. And Alvera reckons with the aftermath of betrayal as she fights for a way to save them all. As they break apart to forge their own paths, Alvera and her crew all face the same question: what are they willing to sacrifice to save those left behind?

Descriptive, it’s like being there.

Great space opera! Looking forward to books two and three. Interesting and well thought out alien species.

Confusion

Not suotable for audio. There are to many names, factions, etc. I got lost early on.
But there is a good story here, even if it is a little too close to "Mass Effect"🙂

First Contact Adventure with action

The mission is to find a new home for humanity as their planet is dying. The people left behind are dependent upon a small handpicked crew to find their new home and save them. The weight of responsibility is telling as the crew is feeling the burden of their mission enhanced by encounters with aliens on the verge of war. Alliances are changing, betrayals, and the question of how much more they must sacrifice to save those left behind.

The author, N. C. Scrimgeour, weaves an intriguing story about sacrifices and desires. Her world-building is detailed and vividly described. Each character is developed according to their role in the story at this time, they are guaranteed to be further developed as their mission proceeds later in the series. There are several themes running throughout this book, such as cultural interactions, motives, humanity, conflicts, strength, and more. I found it interesting that the aliens suffer from many of the same issues experienced by humans – greed, lust, betrayal, self-importance, relationships, psychological issues, etc. are nicely woven throughout. The dialogue was rich and satisfying as well as the vivid descriptions.

The narrator delivers a solid performance moving the storyline along and enhancing each character. Jared Kedzia speaks clearly and with a steady cadence. Nicely done.

Rich in details and characters, anyone with a passion for sci-fi will enjoy this audiobook immensely.

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.
