Publisher's summary

As an honored physician and teacher, Rachel Naomi Remen has spent a lifetime immersed in the world of science. Yet today, after four decades of face-to-face experience with cancer patients, medical academia, and her own chronic illness, she has come to see that life is best defined not by science but by mystery.

In The Will to Live and Other Mysteries, this best-selling author and beloved healer of the heart probes the experience of mystery and illuminates its power to literally transform our lives. We are a culture that worships science, Dr. Remen begins, even though science is unable to fully explain the mystery of how we heal. In her own words, Dr. Remen shares compelling frontline stories of people who - against all odds - embodied the will to live and opened to the power of mystery as a healing resource. This source of wonder and hope, she says, is available to all of us at any time.

Complete with step-by-step exercises that Dr. Remen has taught to thousands of people, The Will to Live and Other Mysteries will touch you, strengthen you, and awaken you to the mysterious innate power to heal that is within us all.

mystery

I loved the story. Rachel at her best. Exercises more commonplace. I would have preferred all stories.

So lovely

Listening to the author read this - and lead the meditation at the end was touching and moving. The gentle way she laughed with some of the thoughts as she read was uplifting - so joyful but gentle - it surprised and delighted me. Her sincerity and way of inviting the listener in to witness mystery was inspiring - I hope that my eyes and heart will stay open to see more mystery, love and life.

impactful

I wish it was longer, and had more to do with loss of ones self.

Very Interesting

This is very short, but still fascinating—it is quite good for meditation and self- knowledge in part two, but I really wanted more of part one. Remen’s narration is good but a little too soft—I would have preferred it louder. I was hoping to find her book Kitchen Table Wisdom recorded, when only this one popped up. The other was published too long ago —probably.

A must-read for anyone struggling in their life.

This narrative helped lift me out of 30 years of depression. After a spinal injury ended a 35-year career in dentistry helping others, I have been bedridden with pain, fear, and anxiety, and lost all the joy and purpose in my life. this book has helped me find myself again; the joy and gratitude I have been missing for the last 2 years of isolation and self-pity. The mind-body connection is authentic and this book helped make that a reality for me. Thank you Dr. Remen.

Worthwhile

This is a shortz, thoughtful publication that’s really more of a workbook, but the audio version was very much worth listening to.
