Publisher's summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

'I've written three books and our deal is over.' That's what reluctant author Anthony Horowitz tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne in an awkward meeting. The truth is that Anthony has got other things on his mind.

His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the famous Vaudeville theatre in Shoreditch. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night.

The play is not enjoyed by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Harriet Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing. The next day, Throsby is stabbed in the heart with an ornamental dagger, which, it turns out, belongs to Anthony, and which has his fingerprints all over it.

Anthony is arrested by an old enemy...Detective Inspector Cara Grunshaw. She's still smarting from her failure to solve the case described in the second Hawthorne adventure: The Sentence Is Death. She blames Anthony for her failure. And now she's out for revenge.

Thrown into prison and brutally interrogated, Anthony is the prime suspect in Throsby's murder, and as a second theatre critic is found to have died in mysterious circumstances, the net closes in. Ever more desperate, he realizes that only one man can help him.

But will Hawthorne take the call?

Excellent!

I loved the first two books however was somewhat disappointed by the third - too many characters, too many coincidences. This one was excellent with great pace, enough red herrings to keep guessing and lots of humor.

Excellent series

I like Anthony Horowitz’s books and always look forward to reading new releases. This particular series is quite inventive and interesting and I enjoyed listening The Twist of a Knife. The plot was great, and the narrator brilliant. It was a pleasure

Brilliant - once again!

Well, to the ‘Tony’ in this series, I am glad you signed the deal for 7. Am really enjoying them - the complexity of plot and clues! Please also promise Rory Kinnear continues to read for us!

A perfect who-dunnit

I have to say that my favourite books from Horowitz are still the Magpie Murder books, but this series is another wonderful combination of his dry British humour and brilliant story telling. I just got a little tired of the Hawthorne mystery after four books and think they are maybe dragging it out too long. That said, this is without a doubt one of the best performances and story lines in the Murder mystery genre.

Very entertaining

Very good series with each book revealing more of Howthorn as well as a life of a writer. When you listen you feel like Tony feels and you laugh at yourself.

Liked the First 2 in the Series, but…

Liked the First 2 in the Series, but I have grown more and more annoyed with both main characters. Anthony is a little to clueless sidekick who gets in the way because he thinks he is very clever and Hawthorne is so superficially described and the whole idea of the mystery behind the man, has been dragged out to long.
The plot was again good, but the characters ruins it and this is the last Horowitz I will read
