Publisher's summary

Named a best book of fall 2019 by People Magazine, Boston Globe, BookBub, PopSugar, CrimeReads, and more.

“Brilliant.... A well-crafted psychological thriller.” (The New York Times Book Review)

When former journalist Rain Winter was 12 years old, she narrowly escaped an abduction while walking to a friend’s house. The abductor was eventually found and sent to prison, but years later was released. Then someone delivered real justice - and killed him in cold blood.

Now Rain is living the perfect suburban life, spending her days as a stay-at-home mom. But when another criminal who escaped justice is found dead, Rain is unexpectedly drawn into the case, forced to revisit memories she’s worked hard to leave behind. Is there a vigilante at work? Who is the next target? Why can’t Rain just let it go?

Introducing one of the most compelling and original killers in crime fiction today, Lisa Unger takes listeners deep inside the minds of both perpetrator and victim, blurring the lines between right and wrong, crime and justice, and showing that sometimes even good people are drawn to do evil things.

Don't miss Lisa Unger's newest thrilling and chilling novel, Last Girl Ghosted!

wow!

This book has so many twists and turns that it's like reading mini stories within the big storyline, and yet, the author is talented enough to keep it all from becoming confusing. I absolutely loved this book. It's about three young children who get taken by an awful man, one of them doesn't make it out alive. The other two have this confusing relationship with each other well in to adulthood. He becomes a child psychologist, she becomes a reporter, but their shared secrets of the past won't keep them apart.

Disturbing topic

The two narrators were very confusing and jumping from one decade to another was very unnecessary. I had to force myself to finish this book. In fact I tried several times to start it and had to put it down. I know that childhood trauma has a lasting effect on it's victims, but Rain kept putting herself in danger constantly as though she wanted to finish what he had started. Both childhood victims had lasting effects that neither seemed to recover from and it not only affected their own lives but the lives of the other important people in their world. I would not recommend this book. The characters were too complex and too damaged to make them interesting.

How have I overlooked this book for so long! Phenomenal journey through twist and turns on a journey to discovering how traumatic events transform us.

Had a hard time listening to the male narrator… boring and monotone

The description of this book sounded great and I’ve listened to more than 500 audiobooks over the last five years. I rarely write a review but, I had a hard time with this one. The male narrator is every other chapter and after an hour or so I started skipping him and just listening to the female narrator. I was surprised that I was able to keep up on the story just fine. That said, with four hours to go I just couldn’t do it anymore because it drug out way beyond my patience. I skipped to the last seven or eight chapters and got everything I needed to know and didn’t feel like I missed anything. There are so many good audiobooks in this genre and I think I’ve bought them all. This just wasn’t one of them… At least for me.

Could not stop listening.

Graphic, but the twists and turns Lisa Unger takes you through are unforgettable. She delves into trauma and the human psyche as if it is her story. A great read.

I was engaged through

I wouldn’t necessarily say that this one kept me constantly guessing but it was nevertheless full of suspense. It did drag just a few places but it was tolerable.

The ending was definitely not what I was expecting!

intriguing plot

Main character development was very good & the plot kept me second guessing, which is unusual for me.
