Publisher's summary

Sequel to Winterhouse, an audiobook recommended by Parents' Choice.

Bookish puzzles, phantom mysteries, and evil curses await as Elizabeth returns to Winterhouse in the second audiobook in this magical series.

Back at the Winterhouse hotel for another holiday season, Elizabeth and Freddy dig deeper into the mystery surrounding Riley S. Granger, a hotel guest who left behind odd artifacts - one being a magical book that the evil Gracella Winters once attempted to use to gain destructive power over the entire Falls lineage. The two friends follow a trail of clues, inadvertently attracting the attention of a suspicious new hotel guest: Elana Vesper. The clock is ticking as Elizabeth and Freddy struggle to figure out whether Elana is merely a pawn or a player in the plot to revive the spirit of Gracella.

If that wasn’t enough, Elizabeth suspects she is coming into her own special powers - and she’s fearful it might lead her right into Gracella’s vicious web.

Mystery, adventure, and a winning friendship combine in this much anticipated sequel.

A Christy Ottaviano book.

LOVE THIS SERIES

The first book is better but this gives you all the characters you know and love and more. Same magical thing are happening and there might be even a little family history in there. (Definitely read the first book then this one)

Great Story

The story is good, but Elizabeth shouldn’t tell Norbridge everything she knows about the secret passageways. I am 11

Magical

As a huge fan of the HP series I really enjoy these types of books. Elizabeth is such a charming little girl and Freddy is a wonderful character as well. Elizabeth gets a little too inquisitive but that is also part of her charm. I am a woman in my late 40’s and I firmly believe your never too old to love magic. I recommend this listen to any age. Can’t wait to start the next in the series.

The stories are OK, the narrator is a weak spot.

To be clear, I’m an adult of average intelligence and a moderate level of experience with world (i.e. non-North American) cultures. I enjoy adolescent fantasy novels because they usually leave out the physical romance themes. I can handle a HP level of romance but I don’t need more than that. I do however want an exciting story with robust characters. The Winterhouse stories are OK, but not great. I am only a few chapters into book 2 so I cant speak for the series as a whole. I will say that the characters are only ok, not much there for me to feel for or be drawn in by, at this point. The end of the first book was oddly drawn out. It felt like it could have ended a few chapters sooner. However, the largest issue for me is the narrator and how she clearly mispronounces words and (in some parts) it sounds like she read parts wrong, because the grammar seems off. I don’t have a problem with her voice, but the errors really distract from the story, which is already barely holding my attention and my suspension of disbelief. Referring to a mural of birds as an Avery rather than an aviary? Yikes! And she absolutely butchered the name of the hat shop, which is clearly based on one of the Latin “Romance languages” (perhaps Portuguese?). Ouch! Who edits and reviews audio books before they are released? This series may be intended for younger audiences but we should be helping to broaden their horizons not misinform them!
