Publisher's summary

A smile, a dance, some flirtatious bante—and witty heiress Luciana Piccolo was swept off her feet. Literally.

When a mysterious, gorgeous woman whisks her onto the dance floor at her father's masquerade ball, Lucy is thrilled to break the shackles of her privileged but purposeless life. But when the same woman kidnaps her and whisks her to the hideout of the rebels fighting to topple the regime she's set to inherit, Lucy isn't thrilled to be actually shackled as a prisoner. She is forced to accompany her abductor—a laconic, rigid assassin named Taylor—across the war-torn regions of the former United States as Taylor carries out perilous assassinations and leads the growing rebel army.

Relying on each other to stay alive, the antagonistic spark between Lucy and Taylor smolders into an ardent flame. Secrets unravel and the stakes get fatally higher, as the battle between new love and old loyalty may prove more dangerous than the war they're trying to survive.

Worth every minute, don’t think about it just listen. It’s a slow burn but worth it.

Pleasant Surprise

Went into the book not really expecting much. Was pleasantly surprised to find a well written story with lovable characters. This book had me grinning quite often. Will definitely be listening to it again in the future.

Wow! What a beautiful book!

This is the first (hopefully more to come) of this author’s books. While it was a long journey to the end, it was never boring. The plot was riveting. At times there were twists and turns, other times there was humor and sorrow. The development of the love between Lucy and Taylor was poignant, and very sweet. The supporting characters were incredibly well written as well. The relationship between Taylor and Hunter, and Mason was like no other real sibling group even though they were not blood siblings. Ms. Davenport was the nurturing parent they should have had. Thea was the soulless leader that heartlessly tortured Taylor because she could even though it served no purpose.

The narrator Ms. Jensen was amazing! She could change her voice effortlessly between characters.

Overall, this was an amazing book and hopefully there’ll be more in the future just like it.

A compelling medium/slow burn

When starting this wonderful story, it compelled me to dive in. I am not one for slow burn romance books usually, but the pace was natural in a way that helped with immersing into it. With its war time setting, it tackled a few heavy topics in a way that didn't drag the story down, but also shed a tiny light on the more mature and long lasting aspect.
All-in-all, this post-US government, war time rebellion story was a delightful and delicious read. 10/10

That was a worth-it marathon

TJ’s vivid descriptions of this broken, civil war ridden, chaotic world is amazing. This is not like other audiobooks I have that I can just play in the background whilst doing chores or work. I often had to rewind and listen again or pause and pull out my kindle to follow along. It’s admittedly, long so it was a bit frustrating to have to stop what I’m doing to make sense of what is going on for several days. However, it was 100% worth it. The language, details, the individual stories, the romance are incredible.

The narrator was pretty good. Most of the characters had their individual voices and presence. She slips/ mixes up voices which isn’t abnormal for narrators, but I will say it happens a lot more than what I’m used to.

I would recommend waiting until vacation/holiday to listen to this story. Missing out on even a few seconds of detail equals to missing crucial information.

Harbinger of things to come

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. However, I also wonder if this is what the United States is looking forward to. The outcome would certainly be welcome. I just hope we don’t have to go through the beginning. Thank you for this story.

should get 10 stars if possible!

Don't pass up, it's long and a slow burn but completely worth it. And even funny too. Very much enjoyed!

The sex scene, although a tiny part of the story, were very well described.

There wasn't anything I disliked. The whole story was very riveting and took me into the characters world.
