Publisher's summary

For fans of John D. MacDonald and his Coastal Florida mysteries, The Last Breath by Danny Lopez will rekindle the flame.

Unemployed newspaper reporter Dexter Vega is hired to investigate the drowning of Liam Fleming, the son of a wealthy real estate investor in Siesta Key. Vega’s search for clues takes him from one end of this picturesque barrier island off the coast of Sarasota to the other. But nothing adds up. Liam was young, an experienced swimmer, and apparently healthy and drowned in four feet of water. And why was Liam living in a beach shack? Why was he buying properties and not selling them?

The police are getting nowhere as they identify every beach bum on Siesta Key as a suspect. But Vega narrows his investigation to two - one who disappears and the other with whom he’s falling in love. Beach bums and hippies go missing, while greed, beachfront property, and drugs swirl in vicious loops - and when they converge, Vega puts his life on the line to find the truth.

So Many Suspects!

The Last Breath by Danny Lopez really pulled me in with its fast pace and so many suspects. I was surprised with who the killer was and the motivation. The imagery in the story was great! The drum circIe at the celebration of life was such a poignant moment and fitting. The ending of this book really tied things together. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. I will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator.

An Excellent Murder Mystery Set in The Keys

I really enjoyed listening to The Last Breath. It was one of the better murder mysteries I've heard. The setting was amazing in Siesta Key. Dex was hired to find out what happened to Liam who had been using his dad's money to buy up a lot of property on the key. Dex began meeting each of Liam's friends by going to a drum circle and a bar on the beach. All the characters were great. I liked Dex and Tessa a lot. They were very well-developed and likeable. The story was suspenseful and it kept me guessing until the end. This story, written by Danny Lopez was very well written. Definitely recommended as I found it to be a hidden gem.

Seth Podowitz's narration was also very well done. He had terrific voice inflections and gave the characters distinct accents. I liked the beachy surfer style a lot. None were over done. The reading of this audiobook was perfect for the story.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Fun Mystery Novel with Colorful Characters

This was a pretty fun novel that was full of colorful and interesting characters. It was chock full of suspects and was fun trying to figure out who it would be. It had it's twists and turns and things you did not see coming. Dexter Vega is a fairly likeable character who makes a pretty good detective. The setting of Siesta Key Florida was interesting and almost a character in itself, and full of very colorful beach bum characters which made things interesting. It was narrated very well by Seth Podowitz which made the story even more enjoyable. I would recommend it overall and would definitely be interested in reading more in the series.
