The first audiobook which appeared in Georges Simenon's famous Maigret series, in a gripping new translation by David Bellos.Inevitably Maigret was a hostile presence in the Majestic. He constituted a kind of foreign body that the hotel's atmosphere could not assimilate. Not that he looked like a cartoon policeman. He didn't have a moustache and he didn't wear heavy boots. His clothes were well cut and made of fairly light worsted. He shaved every day and looked after his hands. But his frame was proletarian. He was a big, bony man.

In the India of 1942, two rapes take place simultaneously - that of an English girl in Mayapore, and that of India by the British. Story
The first three mysteries for Dorothy L. Sayers' aristocratic sleuth: first, a body is discovered in a Battersea bathroom, wearing nothing but a pair of pince-nez, on the same night that financier Sir Reuben Levy disappears from his Park Lane home. Then, Wimsey returns to England when his brother, the Duke of Denver, is accused of murdering the fiance of their sister, Lady Mary, and a trial in the House of Lords looms; and finally, an overheard conversation in a restaurant begins an investigation of the strangely premature death of wealthy and terminally ill old lady Miss Agatha Dawson.

Story
The sisters at a lonely Cornish convent share a chilling secret they cannot confess...Sister Sophia is dead. Another disappears. And a mysterious last letter from a dying nun is sent to the prioress. Sister Joan has faced her own demons. Now she is sent to the convent to investigate, as well as teach the local children. There are whispers of virgin sacrifice and suicide, and the mother prioress certainly wears pink nail varnish. And who is the young man hiding in the bracken?

Includes excellent attempt at British accent! :-)
It’s really neat, listening to an Inspecyor Morse novel being performed by his Lewis (from the tv shows) :-)
Added to the enjoyment of that is Lewis’s (ok, Kevin Whatley’s ;-) ) pretty darn decent attempts at American accents, an attempt which succeeds more and more, as his performance travels further and further into/through the book :-) (I have listened to quite a few audiobook and tv show performers’ attempts at American accents, and most fall FAR short of their marks. Kevin Whatley’s is DEFINITELY the best I’ve so far heard :-)
My only criticism of this book is that the end of it seems to have been pushed through to print too quickly. In Morse’s final soliloquy, he makes some QUITE ELEMENTARY, grammar mistakes. Yup; Morse, who is a HUGE stickler re grammar. Ah well; the book is sufficiently enjoyable, as to cause one to almost completely ignore those mistakes.
