Generations of writers have explored these new frontiers and the endless possibilities they present in great detail. The Final Frontier delivers stories from across this literary spectrum, a reminder that the universe is far large and brimming with possibilities than we could ever imagine, as hard as we may try.

Special Forces are accustomed to crazy ops, but orbiting a black hole to slow down time and fight Earth’s dirty wars in the future? That’s new, even for them. But that’s the mission for Owen Quarry, Anaya Pretorius, and the rest of COG, a company of elite, disgraced, soldiers from around the globe. They join a defrocked company commander, an AI warship with self-confidence issues, and a crew of misfit troopers on a dizzying time-quest: prove the concept of stationing armies in space-time. On New Year’s Day 2013, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Gene Weingarten asked three strangers to, literally, pluck a day, month, and year from a hat. That day - chosen completely at random - was Sunday, December 28, 1986, by any conventional measure a most ordinary day. Weingarten spent the next six years proving that there is no such thing. That Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s turned out to be filled with comedy, tragedy, implausible irony, cosmic comeuppances, kindness, cruelty, heroism, cowardice, genius, idiocy, and much more....

In a secret, subterranean world beneath the prairie of the Old West, a homesteader risks her life in search of a safe haven. A workman in Andrew Carnegie's steel mills is turned into a medical oddity by the brutal power of the furnaces. The year is 1819, and the renowned chef Owen Wedgwood has been kidnapped by the ruthless pirate Mad Hannah Mabbot. He will be spared, she tells him, as long as he puts exquisite food in front of her every Sunday without fail. To appease the red-haired captain, Wedgwood gets cracking with the meager supplies on board. His first triumph at sea is actual bread, made from a sourdough starter that he leavens in a tin under his shirt throughout a roaring battle, as men are cutlassed all around him. Soon he's making tea-smoked eel and brewing pineapple-banana cider.

There are enough really interesting stories to make it worth the listen. All are nicely written and some are quite lovely. There is a fragment of a longer story that is really intriguing. Why was it included with no indication of where to continue? Overall? A grim vision of our future but poignant.

So Interwoven
I bought “The Hidden Girl and Other Stories” without any suggestions or recommendations from anyone. This is the best book that I’ve read so far this year. I’m a science fiction junkie. All of the stories in this book are so interwoven that you feel like you are reading an anthology, but they are intertwined together. Ken Liu is a remarkable author. These sets of short stories are so well put together that you feel like you are reading one novel.

A kind of a novel
Several stories are connected and not all of them of the same quality. Some stories are awesome, some are just good. None is mediocre or bad. I've immensely enjoyed the Hidden girl.

fine
Of this authors 3 collections of shorts this is my least favorite. It feels like a full novel that's been sectioned out into shorts...it's a beautiful idea but I don't think I was in the mood for him at the moment. The low rating is my fault. I hope to change it to 4 stars later.
