Publisher's summary

Do you secretly believe you're not “good enough” to have the life you'd love to live? Or when colleagues or friends commend you on a job well done, you feel you could have done better, or agonize over the one or two missteps you made along the way? Or deep down, you think you "fooled" them because it was just "luck", and had nothing to do with your abilities? You struggle to make critical decisions for fear of failing, making mistakes, or being judged by others. This leads to procrastination or thinking you are not motivated enough or ready for change. If you identify with the above struggles, then The Enemy of Good: How to Overcome Perfectionism, Fear of Failure, and Inaction So You Can Finally Feel Good Enough may be your step in the right direction.

As the Greek mythology figure Icarus flew too close to the sun and his wings melted, perfectionists pursue unattainable goals that result in burnout and dissatisfaction. The Enemy of Good will provide a uniquely insightful and multi-faceted approach to silence your inner critic, stop analysis paralysis, and disrupt the unending cycle of feeling anxious, depressed, and judgmental of yourself and others.

Inside The Enemy of Good, discover:

  • The fallacy of perfectionism.
  • The root causes of perfectionism.
  • How to identify your perfectionistic tendencies.
  • Ways perfectionism manifests in everyday life.
  • Multidisciplinary, science-based techniques that will help retrain your brain.
  • How to turn your need for perfection into a more productive, healthy, and happy lifestyle.

Even if you have tried but failed to defeat perfectionism in the past, the tools and resources in this book will never let "perfect" be the enemy of your good again.

Consistency > Perfection

Wow! This audiobook has so many beneficial perspectives and strategies listeners can learn and implement to tame their perfectionism. I found the conversation about Cognitive Behavior exercises very eye-opening and the real-life stories the author shared in this discussion helped to illustrate the example exercises. I appreciated the deep dive into perfectionism and social media as well.

SO GOOD!

This book is a consoling, educational, and helpful manual for those of us who "suffer" from perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and failure anxiety. The Enemy of Good stands out for its comprehensive treatment to the error of perfectionism, including its fundamental origins and practical manifestations. Excellent insights are offered, transforming the quest for perfection into a way to live a more successful, healthier, and joyful life.
I'm pleased that this book entered my life at this moment, especially since I've been anxious about my goals not being accomplished the way I had anticipated. This book really made me realize how rigid I was about the results I wanted for my goals.

Real Help for Navigating Damaging Perfectionism

This is a compassionate and well written book on overcoming perfectionism, and I'm not disappointed. I am not personally dealing with it, but I have loved ones who do battle this, and by listening to this I've been better equipped to interact with them in a way that helps release them from those tendencies, versus behaving in ways that accidentally feed into them. I appreciate what Jamie has created here. High points for me were understanding the issue at the root, combined with the practical steps to "non-perfectionism". This is a book that needs to get into the hands of more people!

Retraining my brain

When COVID hit, I was pushed into leadership due to everyone else quitting. I was not prepared for it. As the months (and now years) have passed I still sometimes get hit with the feeling of "Imposter Syndrome." I especially loved the root causes of perfection as well as the 7 effective steps. They are practical, implementable, and science-based. This book is great for anyone with those lingering self-doubts which keep them from reaching their full potential.
