Publisher's summary

Jack Reacher. Hero. Loner. Soldier. Soldier’s son. An elite military cop, he was one of the army’s brightest stars. But in every cop’s life there is a turning point. One case. One messy, tangled case that can shatter a career. Turn a lawman into a renegade. And make him question words like honor, valor, and duty. For Jack Reacher, this is that case.

New Year’s Day, 1990. The Berlin Wall is coming down. The world is changing. And in a North Carolina “hot-sheets” motel, a two-star general is found dead. His briefcase is missing. Nobody knows what was in it. Within minutes Jack Reacher has his orders: Control the situation. But this situation can’t be controlled. Within hours the general’s wife is murdered hundreds of miles away. Then the dominoes really start to fall.

Two Special Forces soldiers - the toughest of the tough - are taken down, one at a time. Top military commanders are moved from place to place in a bizarre game of chess. And somewhere inside the vast worldwide fortress that is the US Army, Jack Reacher - an ordinarily untouchable investigator for the 110th Special Unit - is being set up as a fall guy with the worst enemies a man can have.

But Reacher won’t quit. He’s fighting a new kind of war. And he’s taking a young female lieutenant with him on a deadly hunt that leads them from the ragged edges of a rural army post to the winding streets of Paris to a confrontation with an enemy he didn’t know he had. With his French-born mother dying - and divulging to her son one last, stunning secret - Reacher is forced to question everything he once believed…about his family, his career, his loyalties - and himself. Because this soldier’s son is on his way into the darkness, where he finds a tangled drama of desperate desires and violent death - and a conspiracy more chilling, ingenious, and treacherous than anyone could have guessed.

Great story!

Let me start by saying that I love Lee Child and I am a big fan of reacher books. Sorry for the choppy review, but I am dictating this before a meeting. Lol.

SPOILER ALERT

This would’ve been another five star across-the-board review from me except for the ending. I have a hard time believing that Jack Reacher would set his career on fire to protect a Delta operator who beat a woman in order to trick him into breaking the leg of a strip club owner so that he could sabotage his investigation by filing a complaint. Reacher’s reasoning for this was that after 16 years of service the Delta operator didn’t deserve to be remembered as a liar, and though I acknowledge that after the loss of his mother “doing the right thing” was very important to him, but still this was a plot “Reach” for me! Then again, maybe it was more about Reacher making a mistake and owning up to it because he did in-fact seriously injure the strip club owner who was innocent in that instance!

Otherwise, great story!

Best Reacher novel Ever!!

What I will say is that towards the end I tried not to listen to the book too much because it would be over. This is one of those.

Great narration

I am a fan of the Teacher series, and after listening to 6 of the books in audible, this one was the best narrated so far.

Best Jack Reacher so far….

This title was far more entertaining than I anticipated. The tangential story about Reacher’s mother’s history was an extra treat.

Riveting story and reading throughout

Listen to the last 3 minutes and all is knitted together beautifully. Then listened again.

One of the best Jack Reacher novels. Dick Hill does a wonderful job with the cast of characters, bringing each one to life. A pleasure to listen to.

Very very good!

Loved the Army references. What a great story! Reacher rocks! Like Batman, but none of the toys, and he’s very willing to kill. And thank goodness.

Great Storyline

The usual gray storyline and unexpected twists and turns along the way. I would recommend this.
