Publisher's summary
Today, André and Felicie Cailloux are forgotten names, but André was the first black hero in the very first African-American regiment to see major action in the Civil War.
Included in this volatile mix is a heroic white priest, Claude Paschal Maistre, who takes a stand on behalf of the city’s free people of color. What’s more, strange things are happening, and they involve two real-life criminals straight from the colorful history of New Orleans—a six-foot, red-haired prostitute, who wields a double-bladed knife, and her boyfriend, a man with a chain and steel ball attached to his amputated arm.
In 1862, nothing is normal in New Orleans. It’s a powderkeg…about to explode.

The 13 chapters of The Art of War, each devoted to one aspect of warfare, were compiled by the high-ranking Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher Sun-Tzu. In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

Story
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

We have heard his favorite lies and accusations, we have observed him engendering fear, and we ...

Based on Black Civil War history
First, I’m not a fan of “Virtual Voice,” but in this book it does sound real. Unfortunately it sounds like a real human who isn’t very good at narrating a book. It was sometimes a distraction but it didn’t keep me from finishing the story. I knew little about this history and found the story to be informative as well as enjoyable. The ending was a little disappointing, but historically accurate. If you’re into Civil War history and can put up with quirky narration, give this a try.
