Publisher's summary
A riveting, action-packed sci-fi thriller about a young girl on a mission to rescue her best friend, from C.J. Redwine, the New York Times best-selling author of The Shadow Queen.
There are three rules in Black River Falls:
- Don’t break curfew unless you want the monsters to find you.
- Don’t ask questions, no matter what.
- When someone goes missing, don’t go looking.
Joey Barnes obeyed those rules, until the day her mother vanished without a trace. She’s spent two years secretly hunting for clues, and she’s discovered plenty of things that don’t make sense, even for Black River Falls. Like the fact that Harrison Pelt keeps a chest full of weapons under a loose floorboard in his porch. Or that there’s a steel door hidden behind a shelf of old books in the library. She's become so good at snooping, she’s found enough strange facts to fill up her favorite purple journal. What she hasn’t found is her mother.
When her best friend, Emily, goes missing, too, and the grown-ups seem ready to accept it, Joey decides enough is enough. Relying on unlikely friendships and a streak of stubbornness, Joey is determined to find her friend, solve the mystery that plagues Black River Falls, and, if she’s lucky, find her mother, too.
That is, if the monsters don’t find her first.

The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

In the Clandoms, everyone is born with wings, with tight-knit communities formed around bird types: Jay, Falcon, Crow. Ellie Meadows dreams of growing up to join the Goldwings - the famed knights who defend all the people of the Clandoms. It was a Goldwing, after all, who saved her life on that terrible day her parents were killed. It’s two months before Amelia’s big audition for the Mystwick School of Musicraft. If she gets in, she will learn to spin music into powerful magic - but her Gran has one last-ditch plan to persuade her out of it: sports camp. A week of softball, sprinting, and sweaty socks isn't exactly Amelia’s idea of a good time - in fact, she's deeply, appallingly unathletic. By the end of day one, she’s puked her guts out in track, gotten a black eye in no-contact flag football, and firmly established herself as the Least Valuable Player at camp.

Even as an adult....
I found this book to be very entertaining! I was thinking of recommending this book to my young daughter so I decided to listen to it first. I am so glad I did! It was very entertaining and thrilling! I would highly recommend this book to any parent who is looking for books for their children. It's a mystery/thriller, but not too much for a child. It's just enough to even keep an adult reading to the next page to see what's going to happen. I, personally, can't wait for a sequel!

Great Story, Wonderful performance!
I tried this book out because I’ve run out of book recommendations and went exploring. I absolutely loved this story! The narrator was fabulous, bringing emotion to each character. I really like that she did all of the voices, since it’s told from a young girl’s perspective. This would be a perfect thriller book for 9-13 year olds, but I’m 36 and enjoyed it fully. C.J. Redwine knocked it out of the park with this one, and I hope there are sequels in the works!
