Publisher's summary

A cryptic murder pulls a former soldier turned financial analyst deep into the corruption and menace that prowl beneath the opulent world of finance, in #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci’s new thriller.

Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

Sara Ewes, Devine’s coworker and former girlfriend, has been found hanging in a storage room of his office building—presumably a suicide, at least for now—prompting the NYPD to come calling on him. If that wasn’t enough, before the day is out, Devine receives another ominous visit, a confrontation that threatens to dredge up grim secrets from his past in the army unless he participates in a clandestine investigation into his firm. This treacherous role will take him from the impossibly glittering lives he once saw only through a train window, to the darkest corners of the country’s economic halls of power . . . where something rotten lurks. And apart from this high-stakes conspiracy, there’s a killer out there with their own agenda, and Devine is the bull’s-eye.

A new Baldacci exmilitary protagonist…

Travis Devine is the newest character in (hopefully new series) David Baldacci’s most recent novel. A former Army Ranger who left after doing something he felt was the right thing but knew if discovered he could face a court martial.
After retiring he chose to get an MBA and was lucky enough to get an entry level job at a prestigious investment firm.
One morning he receives an email from a return address that doesn’t conform to any email he’s ever seen. It tells him of an apparent suicide of a coworker, mentor and girlfriend for a very short time. It soon becomes obvious that this wasn’t a suicide but a murder. Travis believes it was the murderer who sent him that email.
The Feds believe the company he’s working for is into something corrupt. They pressure Travis into investigating her death and hopefully digging up something they can use against the firm. What Travis finds is that someone there is trying to frame him. Luckily the timing of events do not exactly add up.
The suspense is exhilarating. This is fast paced with twists and turns throughout. This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!
The three narrators work well together. They all gave believable performances.

Not worth the credit

When a mystery writer has to have one of the characters explain the ending of the story, I believe it’s an example of lazy technique. This book is confusing. The main character is not developed. The action is unbelievable. It is not up to Baldachi’s usual writing. Don’t waste a credit.

Crash landed the ending.

Intrigue all along the way. Overall a curious webbed plot which keeps your mind turning. The ending however! The ending leaves you thinking that the author had to go on vacation tomorrow morning and crash landed the ending so they can quickly pack. There was excessive over explanation as to why the “whom” did “what” they did and the agenda. So lame. The only real reason to listen to the solve at the end is to be able to write a review.

Was this really written by Baldacci???

Since when does the main character make foolish wand weak decisions. An Army Ranger would never be so gullible and weak. What a disappointment, I wonder if it was penned by another author. Out of character totally.

Not so good

David Baldacci at his worst. Storyline repeated over and over. Just pumping out another book.

Really Baldacci?

Horrible! Can’t believe David Baldacci wrote this. The plot and language are tedious and bland. Don’t waste your credits on this!

Confusing narrative

Chose the book for length and author. Had to struggle to finish it. Main character not particularly likeable or believable. He never lost a fight, he told unnecessary lies that did not advance story and he took to working undercover with no apparent second thoughts. The concept of foreign money buying large swaths of the country and its politicians was both timely and interesting but story itself was confusing, as were the various motivations of main characters.

Brilliant, as usual

Up to date real world plot facts woven in unpredictable story with far more surprises than even the best storytellers typically provide. Loved it. Hope to read more of these characters.
