Publisher's summary

A deadly mystery by CWA Diamond Dagger winner Catherine Aird: where there’s a will, there’s a way - for murder

That Miss Beatrice Wansdyke had died is not particularly surprising. A chemistry mistress at the Girls’ Grammar School in Berebury, she was a longtime sufferer of diabetes who managed to live her modest life to a ripe old age. But one thing is odd - Beatrice Wansdyke died a very wealthy woman. What was an old schoolteacher doing with a small fortune?

Meanwhile, Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan, Calleshire’s finest investigator, learns he is about to become a father. But with ominous players hell-bent on pursuing Miss Wansdyke’s money, will Sloan live to see his child’s first birthday?

good summer 📚

love Catherine Aird's books. clever plots, no cell phone culture, and yet they (we) survived. Great vintage read. very good narrator.

Another ingenious mystery!

Catherine Aird writes smart, funny, and altogether ingenious cozy mysteries, and this was no exception. Also, it was very ably read by Derek Perkins. BTW, although this was published in 1979, it holds up pretty well ... and she is still writing!

A little disappointing, but still good

This one didn’t fit the rest (so far) in how the characters usually behave. Crosby and Lees (sp?) were smarter than usual, and Sloane was a bit of a dingbat, comparatively.

The mystery was good, the narrator was great.
I am absolutely continuing on.

This Book is Smile Worthy

A clever, engaging, and funny book. Some sentences are so well crafted that I read them through twice for the sheer pleasure
of how much can be said perfectly in a few well chosen words. The mystery kept me guessing, and the characters were well developed.

My favorite Aird novel on Audible!

The story line is delightful with the addition of Detective Sloan’s baby on the way. The mystery is intricately woven though the story & I didn’t guess the perpetrator. The performance by Derek Perkins is excellently done, bringing characters to life better than any other narrator.

A favorite for repeat listens

Any audiobook by Catherine Aird is worth listening to, at leastp once. Although, I never tire hearing her sardonic quips and witticisms and have listened to all the CD Sloan audiobooks (those available on Audible) multiple times. I find those narrated by Derek Perkins to be the best.

A lovely cozy

I lovely cozy, with a great narrator. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, including and look back to the late 70s.

Some die eloquent

Very British investigation! I didn't care much for the superior officer, he seemed to get in the way a lot.

Excellent mystery series.

Intriguing stories, enriched by subtle humor and cannily authentic observations. I also enjoy the scattering of literary references.
So glad audible is purchasing more of the Sloan and Crosby series, I will be purchasing all of them.
