Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Story
Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

Nor is her husband. She never actually saw her tormentor properly, but now she recognizes him in every man she sees. A fun golden Hollywood age mystery
A fun mystery and well performed by the narrator. The writing style and the good pace of the mystery makes this a fun choice. The heyday of Hollywood glamour when Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks and Rudolph Valentino were stars is the timeframe for this engaging and interesting book. The story itself is smart and enjoyable. I’m looking forward to more offerings from the author and the narrator.

great but not as good as book 1
it was a cool story, very well written and a ton of twists but I wanted more of book 1 in it. it was a completely different story all together with all new characters. a good story, but not quite what I was expecting. 10/10 would read again.

A++++
There is just nothing bad to say about this series, it is amazing across the board. Stellar writing, narration, plot, characters, it’s got it all, including my favorite time period, the roaring 20s. I was hooked after book one and now I see anything after 2 is not available on audiobook yet which is a major bummer! Hopefully Tavia Gilbert can tell us the next story soon!
Although the plot is a departure from book 1, I feel that it flows nicely into book 2. I love that Jessie is involved in pictures now and that she kept her cousin’s name. I hope she interacts with her found family again in later books. I love the way all the characters talk and I was surprised to learn that many of them were real ppl!
(Spoilers) This series really keeps you guessing throughout and you truly can’t space out for even a second, otherwise you’ll miss something. I loved Jessie’s interactions with all the stars and how she became involved in the murders. I found Faye and Lottie to be the most interesting characters. Female villains are incredibly underrated! The final scene with Faye was breathtaking!
I loved how David made his return and I really enjoyed the introduction of the officer. I LOVE romance and to pull a convincing one off in a mystery is quite the feat. It’s so entertaining that Jessie is caught in a love triangle between a sweet bootlegger and a moral cop of the 1920s. Right now, I’m personally rooting for the officer.
The writing is very descriptive and that combined with Tavia’s amazing voice work really makes you feel immersed in the story and the time period. I highly recommend this book to any fans of romance, mystery, etc. So nice to find a series that is pleasant in every way!

Rather Trite
Tavia Gilbert works hard to elevate the flimsy story. The setting ( 1920's Hollywood ) and the "appearances " of famous personalities from the time are the most interesting aspect of this trite mystery.
