Publisher's summary
Heads or tails?
Three hours into her new job, Blake Larsen stumbles across her first body. But this is no ordinary murder. The scene is elaborately staged, with the victim's head clinically severed from her shoulders. Blake is certain this isn't the killer's first time.
Then, a second woman goes missing, a beautiful young Army wife named Nina Crawford. When the kidnappers—claiming to be ISIS—release a horrific videoed ransom demand threatening to livestream her execution, the attention of the entire country turns to Northern Pines. And a countdown begins. Nina has 48 hours to live.
The two cases must be connected. But why murder one woman and kidnap another? Why deliberately fan the flames of media attention? And why does the killer's MO match two cold cases from almost a decade earlier?
As the FBI searches for terrorists, the body count rises, and protesters battle on the normally placid streets of Northern Pines, only one thing is clear: nothing about this case makes sense. Blake knows she's in a race against time.
And the clock is ticking…

Tragedy has stalked Blake Larsen her entire life. After the violent death of her parents leaves her orphaned, her Green Beret brother Caleb is all she has left. He was there the day she graduated high school and the first person she called after she became a federal agent. Then the cops find him swinging from the rafters. The horrific discovery pushes Blake to the edge of despair. Then one of Caleb's closest friends is violently murdered outside her front door—and the killer snatches a folder from his dying fingers. It's clear Kyle was silenced moments before coming clean

Quantum physicist Matt Bronik is suffering from strange, violent seizures that medical science seems powerless to explain - much to the consternation of his wife, Brigid. Matt doesn't think these fits could be related to his research, which he has always described as benign and esoteric. Of course, I’m not going to murder her in the night. I need my laptop back first. That’s the whole point of making friends with Emily Harper, author of the hugely successful novel Diary of an Octopus. So I could get into her apartment and take back what’s mine. Emily doesn’t know who I really am. She thinks I’m her biggest fan, her new best friend who happens to need a place to stay for a few days. She doesn’t realize the laptop she found—and took—from a busy airport almost two years ago was mine. I don’t care about the laptop, just what's on it: my diary.

Serial killer or terrorist group?
4.25 Stars 🌟
This is the second book in this series. After the craziness in the first book, the North Pines Police Department is undergoing a complete overhaul. Blake is surprised to be offered a Lieutenant's position as a Detective for the neighboring Sheriff's Department. And, because things are never easy, she is faced with a brand new case on the morning of her first day. This case is a doozy. First there is a report of a missing woman. Then a body is discovered, but it is not the missing woman.....
That is how we dive into this action packed book - a serial killer or a terrorist group? Either way, it is a big deal for a small town, especially after the events of the first book.
While I enjoyed this book, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book. There is a LOT. It was also hard for me to imagine all of this happening, especially because she truly had no experience with civilian police departments and is pretty much taking over a lead role for several different agencies. If you can suspend a certain amount of believability, then it makes things a lot easier to take. It is truly a crazy journey and the case itself is pretty crazy.
I did like the book, but I liked book 1 better.
Am I going to keep going with this series? Yep, you better believe it. We still have to figure out what happened to her parents.....

Warning
Equally as good as first book in series and well written. And I don't mind a novel ending with a tempting teaser at the end. BUT it is inexcusable to use the very same teaser at the end of two consecutive books. We know not one thing more about what happened to Blake's parents but there's lots of "oooo, big mystery ahead" and I'm over it.
I won't be continuing with Blake. Sorry.
