Publisher's summary

Subtitled Richard Sharpe and the Invasion of France, June to November 1913, this story features a corrupt political enemy who is determined to disband the South Essex Regiment, and to destroy the life of Major Richard Sharpe.

Sharpe returns to England and discovers an illegal recruiting ring that sells soldiers like cattle to other divisions. The ringleaders know Sharpe is on their trail, and they try to kill him at every turn. But Sharpe is fighting for his command, and as he moves from the dark slums of London to the highest courts of political power, Sharpe will risk charges of treason and death for a final chance at revenge.

Good as always

Terrific as always. Frederick Davidson is an acquired narration taste, but getting this far in the series, it's splendid

I enjoyed the change in the battlefield and the enemy are the bureaucrats and a few old characters.

Fun side quest

Audio version narrated by Frederick Davidson.

This is another side quest entry, but it's a fun one. The first half is almost like a mystery novel and the action in the second is classic Sharpe.

Another adventure!

Cornwell brings us on an adventure through the politics of London which our hero is ill equipped to battle. Might not be the battles and gore or most of the series, but Sharpe die-hards will love it.

Great Sharp book

This book is a gem in the series because it's setting and it's story line are different than the others, the story line is a good one, and it is as crisp a narrative as the others.

it's the details that make the difference

I enjoyed the story because the author took the time to get the details about military dress and tactics accurate.

The best in historical fiction

In my mind there are two all-time great characters in historical fiction: Uthred of Beddenburg and Richard Sharpe.

More Please!

Great fun, lots of adventure, some history. I liked all of Bernard Cornwell Sharpe's books so much that I was deeply depressed when I finished the last one available at audible.
