Publisher's summary

A witty and always original voice, award-winning narrator Alison Larkin is the perfect vessel to bring Jane Austen's first novel to a new audience. This fresh and hugely entertaining listen from "the English American", joined with Austen's deft satire, is as poignant and funny as Austen intended it to be.

Critic reviews

"Raised in England by adoptive parents, Alison Larkin was actually born in America. She herself is a comic writer and performer; and she approaches Austen as a satirist.... The voice reveals all." (The New Yorker)

"Alison Larkin's narration will captivate listeners from the first sentence. Austen's nineteenth-century writing style flows off Larkin's tongue, making the dense passages easy to understand. She effortlessly conveys the many humorous scenes, capturing the pompous gentry and their ridiculous (even to them apparently) social conventions." (AudioFile)

I LOVE this recording!

When I heard that Alison Larkin, my favorite audiobook narrator, was reading Jane Austen I rushed to order this and I loved every minute. This recording deserves the AudioFile Earphones award it received and more. The difference between an Alison Larkin recording of Austen and the others is that she inhabits the characters with such authenticity you feel like you're actually there. She makes Austen's language utterly accessible in the modern age which is no small feat. Alison Larkin's narration of this great classic will have you hooked from the very beginning. Bravo!

Good book

This is one of my favorite books. The narrators performance is good. Some of the characters (Maryanne especially) were made more whiny than I hear them in my head but she still did well.
