Resumen del Editor
Daily gunfights, daily murders, frequent public hangings. Welcome to Los Angeles, California in the 1850s. This amazing first-person account of adventures, revolution, history, and tales, Reminiscences of a Ranger, was written by Major Horace Bell, who was there when it happened and wrote this eyewitness account of Los Angeles’ violent transition from a Mexican pueblo to an American city. You’ll learn the beginnings and of political scheming and corruption. Bell was witness to the election of the first US Senators and Congressmen from California and saw the original corrupt practices of running for office.
Among the many stories and tall tales you’ll hear how:
- Los Angeles became the Murder Capital of the United States in the 1850s
- A political schemer changed a presidential vote by lying to a parish priest
- A woman’s angry curse gave Los Angeles its largest public park
- A bunch of foot soldiers, with no enemy to fight, invented California’s Bear flag
- An old Spanish soldier with a 30-year-old memory of Spain caused Los Angeles to become a pueblo
- Men bought liquor on Sunday during mass in old Mission San Gabriel
- The gold rush in the North changed the Southern California economy
- Dozens of Chinese were massacred as a result of misunderstanding
- The old Spanish Californio life was shattered by lawyers, taxes, and drought
- Americans tried to make money bringing democracy to Nicaragua
- Spanish California became part of the Gringo nation
Reminiscences of a Ranger is considered by many as one of the most accurate, albeit flamboyant and irreverent, books of the early history of Los Angeles and California. It is a true story of how Los Angeles became Los Angeles and California became California. It contains 37 chapters, plus an original afterword with occasional sound effects and music.

Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleon's Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

How did the Wendels, one of New York’s most famous Gilded Age families, disappear from history? The Wendels built a fortune from New York real estate, and rubbed shoulders with the Astors, Vanderbilts, and Stuyvesants. But as the 19th century came to an end, the Wendel family tore itself apart. Following six years of painstaking archival research, Claire Prentice has prised open the door of the Wendels’ Fifth Avenue mansion—dubbed “the house of mystery” by the press—to reveal a fascinating and dysfunctional family imprisoned in a gilded cage.

Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

An unmatched guide to the religious dimensions of American politics, Jeff Sharlet journeys into corners of our national psyche where others fear to tread. The Undertow is both inquiry and meditation, an attempt to understand how, over the last decade, reaction has morphed into delusion, social division into distrust, distrust into paranoia, and hatred into fantasies—sometimes realities—of violence.

What motivated Manson in his seemingly mindless selection of victims, and what was his hold over the young women who obeyed his orders? Now available for the first time in unabridged audio, the gripping story of this famous and haunting crime is brought to life by acclaimed narrator Scott Brick.

In Made in America, Bryson de-mythologizes his native land, explaining how a dusty hamlet with neither woods nor holly became Hollywood, how the Wild West wasn't won, why Americans say 'lootenant' and 'Toosday', how Americans were eating junk food long before the word itself was cooked up, as well as exposing the true origins of the G-string, the original $64,000 question, and Dr Kellogg of cornflakes fame.

This Audiobook has been Edited/Abridged
Reminiscences Of A Ranger is concidered a "classic" personal account of early American California. Originally published in 1881 and still available in print today, the author, Horace Bell, is often quoted in other histories directly from this book. Bell's account of his experiances in Los Angeles and environs are highly entertaining, and enteresting. It's hard to picture Bell's wide open Southern California of the 1850s, compaired to today's built up So Cal
I've read the original book previously, but wanted an Audiobook to listen to while driving/working. I ordered this version read by Andre Stojka, because it was listed as "unabridged". By the 2nd Chapter I realised that the narration didn't sound correct. Upon getting out my printed copy, and reading along as Stojka narrates the book, I found out that words were left out, or changed, so as not to offend today's "Woke"!!! This Audiobook has been Abridged and Edited! It is not as described on Audible/Amazon. It is not the "classic account" as written by Horace Bell that has been available to readers since 1881.
We are losing our "history", and this Audiobook is another example of today's "Nannies" telling Adults what they can and can't read, see, or hear
I immediately returned this Audiobook for a refund. Audible/Amazon needs to change the description for this Audiobook to Abridged & Edited
