MLK said, "People fail to get along with each other because they fear each other. They fear each other because they don't understand each other. They don't understand each other because they have not properly communicated with each other." This audiobook explains how to overcome these fears and communicate properly, especially in situations of cultural difference. In brief, clear chapters, it offers nine steps listeners can use to help make their communicating as personal as possible. This does not mean wearing your heart on your sleeve or prying into the other person's private life, but just "taking in" and "giving out" relevant aspects of what makes each of you a person: your choices, reflections (thoughts about thoughts and actions), emotions-spirit-personality (ESP), and mindfulness (presence). When aspects of these four are on the table between you, uniquenesses can meet, and your communicating can be as personal as possible.
Chapters also demonstrate the importance of curiosity, humility, and platinum empathy in situations of difficult cultural difference.
This book can guide individual efforts to develop your multicultural competence, and can also support racial equity workshops and classes in race-class-gender, inclusion and equity, etc.
