Publisher's summary

"Can anything orthodox come from Pentecostalism?"

This recasting of Nathaniel's familiar question from the Gospel is a fair summary of many modern Christians' assessment of the Pentecostal tradition. Yet in recent years, a growing number of Pentecostals have been turning afresh to the ancient, creedal Christian faith.

Bishop Emilio Alvarez has himself been at the forefront of this movement. In Pentecostal Orthodoxy he introduces the phenomenon, and extends the project of paleo-orthodox ressourcement (associated with scholars such as Thomas Oden and Robert Webber) to include orthodox expressions within Pentecostalism, particularly his own Afro-Latino Pentecostal movement. This book is a manifesto of sorts, promising not only to open up the possibility of a genuinely orthodox Pentecostalism, but to reframe modern ecumenical dialogue as well.

Brilliant history of the history of black and brown people in intersecting orthodoxy and Pentecostalism.

It was refreshing to hear the stories of black and brown folks from the voice of a person who resides at that intersection. Great content. This is definitely a book to read a few times full through, though.

Powerful examination of a critical topic

Dr. Alvarez examines and untangles an incredibly difficult and increasing important aspect of theology. Prior to my exposure to Dr. Alvarez, I had always thought that the terms Pentacostal and Orthodox were polar opposites and seemingly antithetical. Yet I have now begun to learn about the convergence movement and it has allowed me to realize and recognize how this is the movement that will shift church theology to recognize how these seemingly incompatible aspects are actually enhanced when operating together. To have traditional liturgical sacramental teaching transformed through the culturally vibrant pentecostal lens enhances both worship, teaching, and the entire church experience. Prior to my exposure to the convergence movement, I did not think that solid teaching plus Spirit led could be combined or even possible—but now I believe it is the foundation upon how the church can grow.
