Publisher's summary

A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Lonesome Dove, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America.

Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

This remastered audio edition is expertly read by actor Lee Horsley, best known for his starring role in the television series Matt Houston.

Wow, what a story!

I should mention that I too only got the first 48 chapters when I first downloaded it. I thought I had finished the book! It was only after I started listening to the sequel, STREETS OF LAREDO, that I realized there was more. I deleted the book and reinstalled it and all the remaining chapters were there.

Fantastic book. Fantastic character. God bless Augustus McCray!

One of the top 5 novels EVER!

Superb in every aspect! Augustus McRae may be one of the greatest characters ever developed. The television series is in my top 10 of all time. The book is undeniably superior! Horsley was perfect to narrate. The only other person to do this story justice would be Walton Goggins.

Audible fixed partial audiobook

Audible must have fixed the partial audio book that others had mentioned. As others said the narrator annoying voice of Gus is almost unbearable and ruins the feel of what is happening. towards the end of the book it gets better but but much.
I loved the mini series and the movie did a great job of staying true to the book. there are some things that were left out of the movie.

Riveting story

I can't believe it took me so long to get to this book. I couldn't stop listening and didn't want it to end even after 36+ hours.
The narrator does a wonderful job with voices, accents, and pacing.
