Story
A shocking double-murder scene greets Detective Inspector Philip Brennan when he is called to a flat in Colchester. Two women are viciously cut open and laying spread-eagled, one tied to the bed, one on the floor. The woman on the bed has had her stomach cut into and her unborn child is missing. But this is the third time Phil and his team has seen such an atrocity. Two other pregnant women have been killed in this way and their babies taken from them. Publisher's summary
He knows your name. Where you live. The car you drive.
If you don’t play, your family will die. If you lose, you will.
When DI Joel Norris and DS Lucy Rose begin investigating the death of a young woman, murdered on a quiet country lane, they can’t imagine what lies ahead.
This killer uses his victims like chess pieces in a life-sized contest, with the highest stakes imaginable.
Now Norris and Rose are pawns at the mercy of a twisted rulebook.
Can they beat him at his own game before the next round begins and more innocent lives are taken?
A totally addictive, edge-of-your-seat crime-thriller that will leave you breathless. Perfect for fans of Cara Hunter, Ian Rankin and Stuart MacBride.
Critic reviews
"Fast paced thriller that opens with a terrifying bang and doesn’t let up until the last page.... Charlie Gallagher has crafted a twisty thriller that oozes fear and foreboding. His real-life experiences as a police detective shine through in the details and his skill as a writer are evident from the first page to the last. A great thriller that will have you reading through your fingers!" (O.M.J. Ryan)

Story
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Tedious, bland and of course woke
It’s a shame to see a decent writer have to write about such boring characters because interesting characters may be offensive..
This is the kind of tedious drivel that would be fast tracked at Netflix if anyone still watched Netflix.
Shame his first book seemed so promising.

So dull
Actually just wanted this to end. Narrator doesn't differentiate between the characters much, if any. Almost completely monotone.
