Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852)
Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol nació el 20 de marzo de 1809, en Sorochinez, una pequeña aldea de Ucrania, en el seno de una familia acomodada. En 1828 se trasladó a Petersburgo, donde trabajó en la Administración zarista. De entonces data su amistad con el gran poeta Puschkin. Fue para Gogol un verdadero padre literario y un magnífico camarada. En 1834, Gogol consiguió una cátedra de Historia.
Sus estudios y experiencias sobre al Edad Media ucraniana se transformaron en el magnífico poema “Tarás Bulba”. En esta época Gogol escribió “La Avenida Nevski”, “el Diario de un Loco”, “El Capote” y “La Nariz”.
La comedia “El Inspector”, de 1836, le convirtió en un escritor conocido.
Gogol vivió 5 años entre Alemania e Italia.
En 1841, en un nuevo viaje a Roma, influido por el ejemplo de un pintor ruso, monje en un convento, se convirtió en un fervierte cristiano ortodoxo, y desde entonces su vida dio un viraje radical.
De 1846 a 1848 realizó dos peregrinaciones a Palestina, de las que regresó con el espíritu conturbado constantemente por crisis místicas, de las que ya no volvió a salir.
Gogol huye del mundo de manera absoluta, entregado a durísimas penitencias.
El 21 de febrero de 1852, muere Gogol, derramando lágrimas de arrepentimiento por sus propios pecados y por los de su amada Rusia. Tenía 43 años.
