Helmut Schmidt, 1918-2015, war von 1974 bis 1982 Bundeskanzler der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
Das Problem bei der Berufung auf religiöse Anschauungen liegt im Anspruch auf Ausschließlichkeit. Missionieren zu wollen muss daher kritisch betrachtet werden. Prüft man Religionskriege im Kern, so erweisen sie sich zumeist als Eroberungskriege, bei denen Kirchen ihre Mobilisierungsmacht in die Waagschale werfen. Seiner Erfahrung nach, so Schmidt, müsse man jedem Politiker misstrauen, der seine Religion zum Instrument seines Machtstrebens mache. Dennoch verdienen Religionen Respekt, jedoch alle gleichermaßen, in ihrem Anliegen sind sie sich ähnlich.
Hinzuzufügen ist allerdings, dass große Lehrer in der Menschheitsgeschichte, wie Sokrates, Aristoteles oder Konfuzius ihre Ansichten nicht auf Gott, sondern die Vernunft gegründet haben. Ähnliches gilt auch für die Politik. Sie schöpft ihre Legitimation aus demokratischen Verfahren und setzt dabei einen Werterahmen, in dem die Verantwortlichen gute oder eben auch schlechte Politik machen können.
