Publisher's summary

The Greatcoats have found the heir to the throne...but now they must keep her alive, against all the odds.

Falcio Val Mond has completed the final task given to him by the late King Paelis: he has found the King's Charoites (well, one at least). But his task isn't over, and now he, Kest and Brasti must protect the girl from those who want her dead.

That would be simple enough, if it weren't for the renegade Knights and legendary Dashini assassins getting in their way - not to mention the Dukes, who are desperate to hold on to their power at any cost; Trin, the merciless daughter of the ruthless Duke of Rijou; and the cruel Duchess of Hervor, who is determined to be Queen of Tristia.

Of course, the fact that the heir to the throne is 13 years old doesn't help, nor the fact that every day brings Falcio closer to dying from the poison running through his veins. And then there is the Greatcoat's Lament....

4.5 out of 5

Enough humor to lighten some dark things. Liked the character development, hated some characters, loved some.

Loving this series.

Great plot, characters and humour. I was an avid reader as a kid and now 41. This helps me relax in the evenings.

The series could end here

What a great follow-up to a great first book. I'm stand by the title of this review that if no other Greatcoat book came out I'd be satisfied with the wholeness of the story. There is clearly more to do in the world, but the ending was so satisfying and I really hope books 3 and 4 live up to the first two.

Fantastic Fantasy

What a great story! The narrator is perfect. Second in the series is as good as the first. Fantastic to read an intelligent fantasy book in a well developed world.

The performance was brilliant!

The torture scenes were more graphic than I usually read. The characters' voices made the story even better.

Enjoyed but torture scenes are brutal

The pro of audiobook is that a great narrator can make you feel as if you’re there. The con is that it’s not as easy to skip over the really disturbing sections and again a great narrator makes you feel as if you’re there. Great story that keeps surprising you with elegant twists.
