Publisher's summary

For fans of Vera Brittain’s Testament of Youth, a best-selling writer’s American debut and a heart-wrenching novel of WWI - a tale of love, regret, and the powerful draw of the road not taken.

Iris Crane’s tranquil life is shattered when a letter summons memories from her bittersweet past: Her first love, her best friend, and the tragedy that changed everything. Iris, a young Australian nurse, travels to France during World War I to bring home her 15-year-old brother, who ran away to enlist. But in Paris she meets the charismatic Dr. Frances Ivens, who convinces Iris to help establish a field hospital in the old abbey at Royaumont, staffed entirely by women - a decision that will change her life. Seamlessly interwoven is the story of Grace, Iris’s granddaughter in 1970s Australia. Together their narratives paint a portrait of the changing role of women in medicine and the powerful legacy of love.

Excellent except for-

This was an excellent story. Very well written however, it has a gratuitous, descriptive sex scene that starts the book. It is very unnecessary and did not match the rest of the text.

WW I Story of Women in WW I

This story was so good at the end I felt like going back and starting all over again. The story jumps to 1914-1918 (?) and back to current time so it was a little confusing at first but I soon recognized the time periods. Women in medical professions jumped to the cause and earned respect for the services they provided at a makeship hospital during the war in France. SO GOOD!

Get it now you won’t regret it.

Narration was great.

Surprising and delightful

I enjoyed the book and the narrator. The story is lovely and, for someone the a short attention span, kept my interest.

Many themes

This is a lovely story of war, courage and heartbreak. At first I thought it would be another angry feminist tome but it wasn't. The women portrayed were strong and capable but, as we all are, subject to the time and circumstance of their birth.
The narrator was great. I've listened to her reading the Maisey Dobbs series and this was a factor in my picking this particular book.
Lastly, this book is another window into WW1 and the great human tragedy that it was.
