Publisher's summary

US Deputy Marshal Earl Crawford had just entered the office after returning from a typically Texan assignment where bullets flew like dirt in a twister. He hadn’t even hung his hat when the boss approached him about an even more dangerous mission, but only if he chose to accept the job.

Normally, he wasn’t given the choice, but in this case, even though he could have turned it down, he knew that he had to go. He would have to return to East Texas to track down a killer who had brutally murdered a young woman and her young son. What made it impossible to turn down was that murderer had been the dead woman’s husband and father to the boy. He was also Earl's brother.

A Good one !

I enjoy this book because it gives you a sense of how it was in the time period that is being told about ! Very life like!

Very rambling

The narrator sounds like he was made to read westerns aloud, I give him 4 stars but see some room for improvement.

The story isn't bad, but you never really feel any tension or actual danger. The story just kind of moseys along at a steady pace. Its not a bad story, I don't think its one you'll listen to over and over again. Lots of potential here it just goes untapped.

Another great story

I just finished my sixth book by CJ authored by Michael White. Again, 2 months ago I would have never listened to anything that was in the western genre. But these books are so much fun and I love them. I can't wait for the next one thank you guys again Diane

True love from beginning to end.

I enjoyed the storyline. It captured my attention from the first line and held it to the end.

Decent western

For the majority of the story, it was an action packed western with a romance that went along very well with the actions. The ending, however, was pure romance. So sad that modern westerns had to focus so much on the roof romance instead of the action.

This audio version is edited

The story has been edited from the written version. Not sure why but it detracts from what should be a five star review.
Very disappointing.

I have heard/read better

It was a good premise, but the story just didn’t develop very well. On the up side, it was one of the more wholesome (barring some course humor that didn't land) and upright westerns in the genre (which seems to be a rare thing these days) ... and of course I am a sucker for happy endings. The main problem is the lack any real tension in the plot, made so much worse with the mechanical narration. Characters are flat and extremely predictable. World building is poorly researched (US Marshal … a federal agent … is not able to remove a locally elected sheriff because you don’t like the way he does his job). In short, the story didn't connect at all and it went on nearly two hours after resolution of the primary conflict. By the end, I was actually a tad irritated with how the main character was presented, mostly because I know it could have been better.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
