More High Crimes

I love this series and have just about completed the entire collection! It's especially enjoyable when the location figures so prominently, becoming an active player in all the mayhem, and you really do feel as though you're on a retreat to one of many national park "islands". Plus, that Anna Pigeon is my hero! I love her middle-aged modus operandi, her slightly cynical take on life, and particularly her phone calls to her shrink sister, Molly. Even though Barr relies a bit much (for my taste anyway) on action scenes it is still a great read. Can't hardly wait for the next one!

A Fantastic

This is the latest in the Anna Pigeon mystery series. Each mystery is set in a National Park - this one takes place in Yosemite. Even if you haven't read the previous books in the series, you'll find this a great read! All the elements of a great mystery - action, twisting plots, inability to stop listening! Better yet, when you're finished (and hooked on Nevada Barr) you can go back and read the 10 or so books that precede this one!

unsatisfied

This was my first purchase of a Nevada Barr book. Perhaps Nevada Barr writes a good story. However it is too bad that she must resort to crude and vulgar language to tell her story. I did not finish the book. I love a good mystery and I enjoy Barbara Rosenblatt as a narrator, but could not enjoy or finish this story because of the vulgarity. If you are offended by crude and vulgar language do not by this book. Try something by Anne Perry or Alexander McCall Smith.

quick moving and interesting

This is certainly not a novel for the ages, but it is a real good listen. A quick mystery with all the needed suspense and all the needed clues along the way, it kept my attention the whole way through. Just enough quick clever laughs, plenty of meanness in the bad guys and a decent plot. It moves along at a very exciting clip without too much extraneous information and never drags. it will never be discussed in a literature class, but it is a fun quick ride.

pretty good

I have not read a mystery for many years (Hardy Boys in High School), so I decided to get this one as a light summer read. The author's descriptions of Yosemite Valley and the surrounding mountians are impressive and accurate. As a frequent traveler to this area, I found the authors use of setting to be the most enjoyable aspect of the book. I will be considering more books by Nevada Barr.

My Favorite So Far! Couldn't Hit "Pause" Button!

This story was FANTASTIC! I couldn't stop listening to see what was going to happen next... I also couldn't help pulling out Google Earth to see America's Diamond of a gem National Park and imagine where the events took place. I now have a list of all the National Parks I can't wait to visit when we are empty nested. I appreciate the protagonist keeping her "commitments" despite temptation. The characters explored several important problems people and the parks might face. The middle action was terrific. I finished this book in record time!

not what I expected

I've enjoyed reading this Nevada Barr series. They were good vacation or plane books. Not too taxing and I really liked the national park settings. Yes, the plots can be a bit predictable at this point, but interesting enough. However, I found the story line in this story about HIV offensive (as well as being factually inaccurate). It was offensive enough that it makes me hesitate to pick up another in the series.

I like the narrator's voice but found the voice she used for the Anna --the main character--to be high pitched and kind of breathy. Not at all what I would have expected this character to sound like. It grated on me and kept pushing me out of the story in my own head. So over all disappointed.

Good story, wrong reader

Nevada is a great tale spinner, and you get the expected pacing, tension, and intriguing setting. But I'm so sorry they chose Barbara Rosenblat as the reader. I love her in the Elizabeth Peters series, but she seems to be a one trick pony: she plays Anna just as she plays Amelia, arch and coy. Anna is the opposite of that, and it jars all the way through. Still, in spite of the reader, this was worth my purchase.

One star is to many

I purchased this book through Audible because it was featured and on sale. I thought it would be an opportunity to experience a new, to me, author. What a shame. Because of the narration and the melodramatic reading and descriptions I could not finish it. It was so Jr. High Schoohish. Because of this first experience I will not purchase anything by Nevada Barr or anything being narrated by Barbara Rosenblat. What a waste of money. I will be more carefull with anything featured or on sale thinking they have to dispose of inventory.

First time Navada Barr fan

This is my first Navada Barr read. I'm hooked on this National Park Ranger part time super sleuth, or is it the other way around.... Wonderful Sierra Nevada scenery fills the mind with a backdrop of comfortable and relaxing ease, but what a crime story! Anna blends into her character as a lodge waitress, and from that position, things begin to unravel around her. This is a must read.
