Thirty miles off the coast of San Francisco lie the Farallon Islands, known to sailors as the Devil’s Teeth. Despite their fearsome reputation, their remote nature appeals to young Lucy Riley, who in 1859 seeks a new start as a teacher to the lighthouse keepers’ children. But Lucy brings treacherous secrets with her, including a name that isn’t hers and a past she can’t escape. On the island, she meets Will Sisson, a mysterious man who seems to recognize her name—but not her face. Wary of Will at first, Lucy slowly starts to trust him.

When a young woman is found brutally murdered in her own apartment with an intricate pattern of lines carved into her face, Copenhagen police detectives Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner are assigned to the case. Soon, they establish a link between the victim, Julie Stender, and her landlady, Esther de Laurenti, who’s a bit too fond of drink and the host of raucous dinner parties with her artist friends. Citadel is the only human city on the alien planet Edalide, ruled by the biweekly tides that bring both deadly danger and much-needed resources. But the drowning waters, constant threat of starvation, and eternal cold aren’t the most dangerous challenge. For the Flooded Forest is ruled by demons: monsters from Hell sent by their vengeful god as penance for their ancestors’ rebellion. To save their souls and return to their former glory, Citadel must kill every single one. Or so they believe.

Emma Carpenter lives in isolation with her golden retriever Laika, house-sitting an old beachfront home on the rainy Washington coast. Her only human contact is her enigmatic old neighbor, Deek, and (via text) the house’s owner, Jules. One day, she reads a poorly written—but gruesome—horror novel by the author H. G. Kane, and posts a one-star review that drags her into an online argument with none other than the author himself. Soon after, disturbing incidents start to occur at night.

Publisher's summary
When you bury your past, make sure that it’s dead.
It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online.
And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.
For Megan Monroe and her friends, this is how their nightmare begins: a wet whisper over their shoulder; a dark hand reaching out from the edge of their sight; and a name clawing at the back of their minds.
A young woman scratched from their memory.
To stop this devouring terror, Megan will need to mend broken friendships and reassemble her fractured past. For what stalks them hungers to remake itself in their image… piece by bloody piece.
Dig into the haunted past with Head Like a Hole, a novel of malignant secrets, shattered friendships, and twisted bodily horror.

Story
Some art takes on a life of its own. A beautiful house. A loving family. Two kids, a dog, and a tenure-track professorship teaching art at the local university. Dan Rineheart is living the dream. But all dreams must end. When an anonymous painting arrives at the university, Dan is tasked with uncovering the artist. No title. No name. No signature or frame. It’s a disturbing work of grotesque perfection. A work of art...that changes with each viewing. So begins the nightmare. Where painted clocks tick-tock in the dark hours before dawn.

Even if their friends and family think it’s a strange choice for an up-and-coming pair of urban professionals, Harry and Sasha couldn’t be happier about the future they’re building, all by their lonesome.

This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

Refreshing and weird! (in a great way)
I read A LOT of horror and this book was a breath of fresh air among the sea of "just okay" novels I've been drowning in! A story and plot development that kept me guessing, body horror dripping with creativity, and an ending that left me grinning with glee. Narration holds its own and though some points the pace is slowed, I will be revisiting this book in my mind and on the page!

The cover caught my attention and the story did not disappoint. There is so few well written body horror that will leave you feeling icky and this one knocks it out. Had my attention to the very end as the mystery unraveled.

Worth checking out
Gave this a go on audible, and the narration by Tom Jordan was pretty solid.
I could tell within the first few chapters of this one that the writing felt a notch up. It read professional, with a clear voice, and wicked fast direction. The POVs and twirling timeframes keep you on the edge of your seat, and I was hooked to it in a way that I haven’t felt lately. While I’ve finished some other reads in between/since, I think this one started pulling me up out of the kind of slump I was forming. The Goosebumps-esque (but adult) cliffhanger chapter endings certainly helped.
A successful podcaster is looking into a mysterious past with sparse notes found in his uncle’s journal. Strangely, the story unravels itself, and other than him being a clever character and the vessel for some of the backstory, he wasn’t really a necessary character. But on the few occasions the story slows down, he gets the ball moving again, so it works out fine.
A story of mistrust, mistreatment, jealousy, and deceit, Head Like a Hole, is a powerhouse of revenge and regret. Not without its supernatural elements, the novel morphs more than once on what the reader can expect. Kind of like mixing the murder mystery side of a slasher with something tainted like the Ring or the Grudge. The novel has more than its far share of characters, but there are a few that have pretty flat desires/actions. The author does a pretty solid job of reigning it in to close it all up though. And I will definitely check out more by the author.

Body Horror and more!
The first time I saw the cover of this book, I knew that I would eventually read it. Once it was released as an audiobook, I had to give it a listen. And, I'm SO glad that I did!
This book effectively mixes body horror with a sci-fi feel to make a book that will stick with me for a long, long time. One way I judge a book is how much do I think about it while I'm still reading it and how long it stays with me after I finish. This book definitely does both of those things. In fact, I had to wait a few days to absorb what I had read and went back and listened to parts again just to make sure I knew what had happened.
There are some truly creepy/horror filled moments in this book and the psychological aspects added to the terror. It does have quite a bit of gore, but not enough for a wimp like me to give up on it. I think my only complaint is the way the story was presented. I didn't really care for the podcast interview aspect and thought that it detracted from the overall story. As an audiobook, it was a little hard to follow the timeline since the story jumped from place to place a lot.
The narrator did a great job and added a lot to the tension of the book. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author and more narrated by this narrator. Great read for a true horror fan!

Tom Jordan is one the best vocal performers.
This is the first book I've read by this author. As a fan of the weird, 'Head Like a Hole' caught my attention. The clarifying line, 'A Horror Novel' closed the deal, so to speak. Even a good title doesn't always mean a book will live up to an attention-grabbing title or book jacket. In this instance, I could not have been pleased with a book. From the opening pages, author Andrew Van Wey hooked this reader. At no point did I ever feel like I had read a similar tale. In fact, almost every chapter reveals surprises that kept my imagination working over time. I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of this genre. I look forward to reading additional works by this author.
The Audible performance by Tom Jordan is excellent. His talented portrayal of the characters is some of the best I've heard.
