Historia
Strange as it may seem, the gray, oppressive USSR was founded on a fairy tale. It was built on the 20th-century magic called "the planned economy," which was going to gush forth an abundance of good things that the lands of capitalism could never match. And just for a little while, in the heady years of the late 1950s, the magic seemed to be working. Red Plenty is about that moment in history, and how it came, and how it went away. Red Plenty is history, it's fiction, it's as ambitious as Sputnik, and as uncompromising as an Aeroflot flight attendant.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Francis Spufford's Unapologetic is a wonderfully pugnacious defense of Christianity. Refuting critics such as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and the "new atheist" crowd, Spufford, a former atheist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, argues that Christianity is recognizable, drawing on the deep and deeply ordinary vocabulary of human feeling, satisfying those who believe in it by offering a ruthlessly realistic account of the grown-up dignity of Christian experience.

On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

- Named "Novel of the Year" by the UK'S Sunday Times
New York, a small town on the tip of Manhattan island, 1746. One rainy evening in November, a handsome young stranger fresh off the boat arrives at a countinghouse door on Golden Hill Street: This is Mr. Smith, amiable, charming, yet strangely determined to keep suspicion shimmering. For in his pocket, he has what seems to be an order for a thousand pounds, a huge sum, and he won't explain why, or where he comes from, or what he is planning to do in the colonies that requires so much money. Should the New York merchants trust him? Should they risk their credit and refuse to pay? Should they befriend him, seduce him, arrest him...maybe even kill him?
Rich in language and historical perception yet compulsively listenable, Golden Hill is a story "taut with twists and turns" that "keeps you gripped until its tour-de-force conclusion" (The Times, London). Spufford paints an irresistible picture of a New York provokingly different from its later metropolitan self but already entirely a place where a young man with a fast tongue can invent himself afresh, fall in love - and find a world of trouble.

His preference is for wine, women, and cards. But there's a sense of honor there too, and Tom won't pull family strings to get himself out of debt - not even when faced with the appalling horrors of London's notorious debtors' prison: The Marshalsea Gaol.

London, September 1666. The Great Fire rages through the city, consuming everything in its path. Even the impregnable cathedral of St. Paul's is engulfed in flames and reduced to ruins. Among the crowds watching its destruction is James Marwood, son of a disgraced printer and reluctant government informer. In the aftermath of the fire, a semi-mummified body is discovered in the ashes of St. Paul's, in a tomb that should have been empty. The man's body has been mutilated, and his thumbs have been tied behind his back.

Winner of the 1973 National Book Award, Gravity's Rainbow is a postmodern epic, a work as exhaustively significant to the second half of the 20th century as Joyce's Ulysses was to the first. It's 1990 in London and Tom Hargreaves has it all: a burgeoning career as a reporter, fierce ambition and a brisk disregard for the "peasants"—ordinary people, his readers, easy tabloid fodder. His star seems set to rise when he stumbles across a sensational scoop: a dead child on a London estate, grieving parents beloved across the neighborhood, and the finger of suspicion pointing at one reclusive family of Irish immigrants and “bad apples”: the Greens. At their heart sits Carmel: beautiful, otherworldly, broken, and once destined for a future beyond her circumstances.

When the young half-goblin emperor Maia sought to learn who had set the bombs that killed his father and half-brothers, he turned to an obscure resident of his father’s Court, a Prelate of Ulis and a Witness for the Dead. Thara Celehar found the truth, though it did him no good to discover it. He lost his place as a retainer of his cousin the former Empress, and made far too many enemies among the many factions vying for power in the new Court. The favor of the Emperor is a dangerous coin.

Good narration, even better tale
The mystery of "Richard Smith," a young man who shows up in mid-18th-century New York City with a £1000 check is examined over the course of this novel. Along the way there is romance, swordplay, double-dealing (with a feud between the colonial legislature and governor that mirrors the Obama-Congress stalemate of recent years). It almost seems Shakespearean.

Well...
...if you like a tale where the hero meets with one calamity after another, is insulted and wronged and never takes his recompense, then this book is for you. Nicely written and well-read, it nevertheless has a plot that disappoints.

Another Great Book Nearly Wrecked by Reader
I won't elaborate too much. The headline says it all. I really liked Francis Spufford's book, GOLDEN HILL, but to endure hours of the relentlessly colorless voice of limited expressive range plus the reader's droning tempo was a very large price to pay to complete this reading.

Wow
I consider myself a pretty savvy veteran of "books on tape." With a Sysiphean daily commute, I listen to a lot of books. This is hands down one of my all time favorites. Don't think twice (and remember that suggestion) -- do it.

A very good start
This was my first Audible book and I really enjoyed it. I thought the narrator did an excellent job with the different characters' coices.

Great View of NYC Everyday Life In The Late 1740s
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I did yesterday! My friend and I were born in NY State over seventy-five years ago, in different towns miles apart, along the Hudson river. Mysterious Mr Smith age 24 arrives alone in NYC with pop 7,000, from London, pop 70,000 and faces crisis after life threatening crisis without reveling why he is there.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Golden Hill?
Early one morning Mr Smith took a one day trip from lower Manhattan to Tarrytown and back, up on the incoming tide and back on the outgoing tide. The purpose of the trip was to pick-up farm products, and passengers. The counting house master's eldest daughter wanted Mr Smith to be away from lower Manhattan for another reason. FYI The first bridge to Manhattan Island opened in 1848, 100 years after My Smith arrived in Manhattan.
Which scene was your favorite?
I woke up at 3 am this morning wide awake and decided to listen to the last hour of the "Golden Hill" audio book. I'm glad I did! He came very close to being murdered again! and everything came together. I'm glad I didn't read the last chapter first.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
My strong reaction is one of admiration for both the author and the narrator. Golden Hill is one of the very best of the about 100 audio books I've "read" since 2011.

Performance marred by continual mispronunciations
Excellent book and creditable performance marred by continual misreadings and mispronunciations. Kills the period atmosphere.

A twist on the swashbuckler
A well-told and well read novel of adventure and intrigue and humor, the story has the flavor of the daring feats of so many rogues. The difference is the fantastic twist that brings it at once from romance to a tale of contemporary significance. What if??

What a delightful surprise!
Would you listen to Golden Hill again? Why?
The story is intricate, and involving. I loved the evocation of pre-revolutionary New York.
What does Sarah Borges bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her narrative and vocal skills are extraordinary
