Sabato 11 giugno 1289. Nella piana che porta a Poppi, in località Campaldino, si affrontano l'armata aretina dei Ghibellini e quella fiorentina dei Guelfi. Tra le sue file, un giovane cavaliere, Dante Alighieri, combatte come guelfo bianco. Forse l'immagine del Sommo Poeta a cavallo, con la cotta di maglia, la testa chiusa nell'elmo di ferro e la spada in pugno non appartiene al più diffuso immaginario dantesco, certo però è che se molti hanno sentito nominare quella battaglia, il merito va alla Divina Commedia.
Ma Campaldino ha un'importanza centrale per il medievista e non solo perché la vittoria dei fiorentini sancisce l'egemonia del guelfismo in Italia e di Firenze sul resto della Toscana. Grazie al racconto che ne fanno Dino Compagni e Giovanni Villani, Campaldino è infatti in assoluto una delle battaglie medievali che conosciamo meglio, osservatorio ideale per capire come si faceva la guerra nel Medioevo, dal reclutamento degli eserciti al processo decisionale che conduceva all'apertura di un conflitto, dalla pianificazione d'una campagna alla conduzione tattica d'uno scontro, fino alle tensioni sociali che attraversavano le forze armate, specchio, allora come oggi, delle contraddizioni d'una società.
