Forse che si, forse che no è l'ultimo romanzo di D'Annunzio, scritto fra il 1909 e il 1910, ricco di riferimenti autobiografici come la passione per il volo e la storia d’amore dai risvolti drammatici con Giuseppina Mancini, moglie infelice del conte Lorenzo, proprietario di numerosi vigneti in Toscana.
Il protagonista maschile, Paolo Tarsis, è un provetto aviatore e uno spericolato automobilista; Isabella Inghirami, bellissima, sensuale e drammaticamente combattuta fra ragione e istinto, finisce per impazzire, come accadde nella realtà all'amante di D'Annunzio.
Il romanzo è ambientato a Volterra, dove abitano gli Inghirami, una città costruita sopra a giganteschi precipizi scoscesi (le balze) che fanno da sfondo a legami incestuosi, suicidi, tormenti e gelosie destinati a condurre alla rovina tutti i personaggi.
Solo Paolo - che cerca la morte a bordo del suo aereo - riuscirà a salvarsi e ad atterrare sulle coste della Sardegna, compiendo un’impresa memorabile e straordinaria. D'Annunzio diede al romanzo come titolo un celebre motto presente nel soffitto ligneo a labirinto del Palazzo Ducale di Mantova, di cui restò affascinato durante una sua visita.
Poeta, scrittore, drammaturgo, ma anche giornalista, eroe di guerra e politico: Gabriele D'Annunzio è stato sicuramente uno dei protagonisti della storia d’Italia di inizio Novecento. È conosciuto anche come "il Vate" (poeta sacro, profeta). Un soprannome che la dice lunga sul rispetto che gli viene tributato.
Amante dell'arte, dei salotti e delle belle donne, ma anche dei duelli, delle sfide e dello scontro fisico. Senza aver mai paura di osare. Di spingersi più in là del dovuto. Probabilmente era questo il suo segreto, unito ad un talento e ad una sensibilità fuori dal comune, che gli permettevano di leggere nel cuore delle persone e ammaliarle con un verso recitato al momento giusto.
Estetismo e decadentismo: sono questi i due riferimenti principali della poetica D'Annunziana. Nel 1897 entrò in parlamento come deputato. Nel 1914, mentre l’Italia era indecisa se entrare in guerra o no, il poeta si schierò apertamente a favore dell’interventismo e, coerente con la sua scelta, si arruolò volontario, nonostante avesse già 52 anni.
Si distinse soprattutto come pilota di aerei, per voli di ricognizione. Tra le sue imprese più celebri si ricorda il volo su Vienna nel 1918 quando sorvolò la capitale nemica per lanciare volantini che incitavano alla fine delle ostilità. Non ci fu solo gloria. Nel 1916, un incidente aereo gli causò la perdita dell’occhio destro.
