Esteban Echeverría (1805-1851)
José Esteban Echeverría nació en Buenos Aires el 2 de septiembre de 1805. Hijo de español y criolla, quedó huérfano de padre a temprana edad. Entre los años 1826 y 1830, fue becado por el gobierno para formarse a la Sorbona, en París, donde tuvo contacto con el movimiento romántico francés. De vuelta en Buenos Aires, Esteban Echeverría publicó en un diario local, en forma anónima, en 1832, “Elvira o la novia del Plata”, considerada la primera obra romántica de la América de habla castellana. Posteriormente, fue autor de obras como Dogma Socialista, La cautiva y El matadero, entre otras. Debido a su actividad opositora hacia el gobierno argentino, tuvo que exiliarse en Uruguay, en 1839. Primero residió en Colonia, y después a Montevideo. Allí, sus condiciones de vida y su participación pública ya no son las mismas que en Buenos Aires; tuvo que vender parte de su biblioteca para mantenerse y en su correspondencia se ven reflejadas las necesidades económicas, la preocupación por la venta de sus obras y hasta el pedido de ayuda a algún amigo. La pobreza lo retrae y tiene menos protagonismo público, pero no deja de escribir.
Esteban Echeverría falleció en Montevideo el 12 de enero de 1851, a causa de una leucemia. Tenía 45 años.

A reflection of the times
I can't say I enjoyed it but it was unique and unexpected. It is a direct reflection of the male view of the female roll in the represented society. An important historical reference of the literary styles and themes of this era.
