El relato acompaña a las tres mujeres desde su llegada a Flandes hasta el nombramiento, en 1500, de Juana como heredera de las coronas de Castilla y Aragón. En estos cinco años el juego trobado les sirve de oráculo ilícito y de consuelo. Los naipes entretienen a las amigas en los días lluviosos, predicen la suerte de amores y las guían en la maraña de intrigas cortesanas.
Los palacios flamencos son auténticos hervideros de maquinaciones que ponen a prueba el matrimonio de Juana y el futuro de la dinastía Trastámara. Los Reyes Católicos quieren aislar a Francia, pero Felipe discrepa y ve en su esposa castellana el instrumento perfecto para oponerse a la voluntad de sus suegros. Estos son, para Juana, los años decisivos: pasa de ser una joven obediente a una princesa a la que hay que controlar.
