Publisher's summary
"Born From Oblivion - God no longer rules supreme."
In the distant past, long before people populated the Earth, and before animals roamed the planet, something terrifying and cunning made its home in the vegetation covering the planet like a soft green blanket. Lying in wait for millions of years, this species continued to evolve, patiently crossing over and manipulating the genetic code of different species. And now, this perfect omniscient being...born from oblivion has awakened and is ready to feed....
God no longer rules supreme.... It's coming.
American Ted Lazaris is an Amazon best-selling author with seven best sellers to his name, so far. Titles as follows: DragonMan: The Adventures of Luke Starr, DragonMan: The Poseidon Encounter, DragonMan: Face of the Unknown, DragonMan: Descendants of Man, DragonMan: Unfathomable, DragonMan: Experiment in Terror, and DragonMan: The Awakening.
About the author: As author of the DragonMan series, I think it's time I share with you my lifelong struggle with dyslexia. I have always struggled with the problem. In school, it was always terribly difficult for me to read what was right in front of me. And reading, writing, and spelling still to this day remain difficult for me. One thing I've learned despite having this learning disability is that I can accomplish my goals if I don't get overwhelmed by the big picture. I just take one step at a time.
DragonMan: Face of the Unknown, authored by Ted Lazaris who created DragonMan and wrote the series of novels which are being developed and produced by ThunderBall Films, has accomplished the amazing feat of debuting at number one on Amazon, ahead of David Baldacci and James Patterson novels. Number-one Amazon best-selling American author, screenwriter, motion picture producer, songwriter, Ted Lazaris, (DragonMan Productions) received the attention and a Letter of Commendation from former First Lady, Laura Bush.
The DragonMan series is optioned by CEO/Producer Mario Domina of ThunderBall Films Ltd. DragonMan Projects In Development. Screenplays are written by Ted Lazaris and adapted from his published novels by the same names. DragonMan is based on the series of published novels written by, and the original characters created by, Ted Lazaris - Freelance Writing Organization International (FWO-Int'l) member.

Story
For despite his humble Midwest origins, Luke is no ordinary teenager. Imbued with super powers following a ritualistic exchange of blood with a dragon, Luke soon discovers the awesome legacy of his birthright and must learn to accept the fact that he is known in this other world as the Chosen One. Still, in the tradition of Marvel Comics' Stan Lee, creator of modern superheroes like Spider-Man and Silver Surfer, Lazaris's Dragonman is unquestionably human, grappling with his doubts and fears even as he sets off to save Earth from alien beings hell-bent on destruction.

In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. So for his own sake, and the safety of those around him, he lives by rigid rules he's written for himself, practicing normal life as if it were a private religion that could save him from damnation. Dead bodies are normal to John. They don't demand or expect the empathy he's unable to offer. Perhaps that's what gives him the objectivity to recognize that there's something different about the body the police have just found behind the Wash-n-Dry Laundromat - and to appreciate what that difference means.

BOOK REVIEW.......
I liked the book but I hadn't read any of the ones before it so I don't feel I got the full experience of world and characters. This really should be listed as part of a series.

Solid Science Fiction Fun
I really enjoy the writing of the DragonMan series. The dialogue, descriptions, and style are all written for unique cult style sci-fi fans. They are a lot of fun and the fantasy aspects are cryptozoological and alien in nature which is my bread and butter. I find that the story is a bit silly but that is the enjoyable part as this becomes a sit down, turn off your brain, and enjoy the ride type of book. This story is about a plant monster that can take over people’s bodies. First one it picks is a junkie. That should sell you on how great this story is.
DragonMan is a series and I didn’t start from the beginning. From the two stories I have listened to I don’t think there is a need to go in order. The characters and plot, outside of the DragonMan, seem to be different each time and so these standalone quite well.
The characters are quite fantastic which makes the story that much better. Everything from their conversational dialogue to their personalities is great. Adults who grew up watching Saturday Morning Cartoons and read comic books should really enjoy what this book has to offer. The plot is right out of a made for TV science fiction film and not one of those that are so bad they are good, this is just straight up good story telling.
I had mixed feelings on the narration. I started out thinking that his character voices were over the top and became too comical, but as the story progressed I got into his style and it added to the overall feel of the story. It also sounded like this was recorded in a tunnel. Takes a bit to get used to but once I got into the story I didn’t notice it as much.

Book 4 in the DragonMan Series
It does not say it but this is Book four in the series. The characters know each other well and they do have a back story which you can find in the previous books.
My only negative about this book is that it is aimed at teens yet it feels more for an older audience only because the characters are older and so they act older. I would have prefered a more younger characters (or at least the main character) for it to feel YA. However, it is clean and can be read by all.
The narrator I did not like so much because he tended to exggerate his voice when narrating the story. I did find that annoying however, I did like with what he did with the other species. I found it to be different and wish other narrators would do the same.
I would recommend this to those who love fantasy, action and a quick pace.

Did I miss something?
The story is fine, engaging, interesting, unique. The reader is very over animated, sometimes a little over the top, and pretty bad at American accents, but I appreciate the difference in the voices and the excitement he brings (even if it can be a little much).
The problem I had is that it seems like there were definitely previous installments in the series, although nothing in the description of the book indicates that this isn't the first. There are characters with VERY complex back stories that they all seem to know about each other, or in some cases not. Powers and artifacts and stones and whatnot that are very complex and seem like they must have been explained in some other book and are quickly summed up, the way they sort of catch you up to speed at the beginning of a third book in a series, just in case you started with that book or haven't read the first two in a long time. But I think in this case without the previous story about Luke, it's just confusing. I think with that story under your belt, this could make a whole lot more sense.
So, if there are previous books in this series, I think that needs to be more clearly explained in the description of this book. (e.g. Book 3 of the Dragon Man Series) If there aren't, I think there should be.
Not bad overall, but a little too much en media res for me.
I was given this book in exchange for my honest review.

good story
The author did a good job writing this story, but the narrator gave me a headache. I barely made it to the end. If you read this Mr. narrator, pauses are a good thing!

Not quite sure what I think
This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author. Despite not reading any other books in this series I did not really have real issues. I wonder if the books are stand alone threads with an overall common storyline.
It took me a bit to figure out exactly what the Dragonman is, but that eventually was explained. I feel like there was something missing in this plot, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. I was not over enthralled with the storyline but my interest is piqued enough that I’d like to listen to another.
I like how ancient this plant thing is and the lead up to the present day version of the creature. The way it took over and assimilated humans was entertaining.
The book ended with the current altercation being resolved but no real conclusion. There is an obvious lead into the next book.
This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Gareth Johnson ) and I would listen to another if only to see if he improves. He accents and character voices are ok. Some voices are individual, some indistinguishable.
He uses way too much emphasis when there is action and tends to run sentences together. He uses the same cadence for many of the characters. This somewhat impacted my focus while listening.
The Audio was not very good. It sounded like he recorded in a metal tube far away.
Audiobook Boom gives rating for violence, sexual content and language but I don’t recall any sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing??

It's 3.5 both for the story and performance...
It's one of these books which are difficult for me to rate...
On the one hand, it has some great characters - the greatest in this case is the villain:). It also has a very fast-paced plot - the events race one after another, the situation changes in a blink of an eye... It has very short chapters, which adds a lot of tension and dynamics to the whole... It's very descriptive - your imagination doesn't have to work very hard for you to envision the places, people and events...
But these strengths are also the book's weaknesses, surprisingly. There are so many characters that it was difficult for me to follow them sometimes - and some of them could have been totally omitted as their presence did not add anything to the story (as this is a part of a bigger series, I understand they play their parts in other books, but the plentitude of them in this case was overwhelming...). The fast pace of the storyline gave me a feeling of really jumping through time without warning - I had a feeling of scenes missing in between main events... Short chapters are great but illogical when a chapter ends in the middle of a conversation and the next one just continues the same conversation, in the same place, between the same people. It's as if you put a fullstop in the middle of a sentence instead of a coma... It made me lose focus a few times and I had to rewind a chapter to get on track with the plot. All of these make me believe that you should probably read the book rather than listen to it - it will be easier to follow.
Oh, and the biggest fault of the book for me? A huuuuge cliffhanger - there's no ending to the adventure....
As for the narration, it's my first by Mr Johnson. As some other reviewers mentioned, especially at the beginning he sounds a bit over the top, but then you do get used to it and finally I've decided he's somewhere between 'pretty good' and 'great'. I'll try to listen to something else by him and see which way it goes. He definitely is fantastic with the 'alien' voices, he is also good at giving voices to individual characters, to be sure; I liked him a bit less in the narrative parts:)
