Publisher's summary

Empress Celene of Orlais rose to the throne of the most powerful nation in Thedas through wisdom, wit, and ruthless manipulation. Now the empire she has guided into an age of enlightenment is threatened from within by imminent war between the templars and the mages, even as rebellion stirs among the downtrodden elves. To save Orlais, Celene must keep her hold on the throne by any means necessary.

Fighting with the legendary skill of the Orlesian Chevaliers, Grand Duke Gaspard has won countless battles for the empire and the empress. But as the Circle fails and chaos looms, Gaspard begins to doubt that Celene's diplomatic approach to Orlais' problems will keep the empire safe. Perhaps it is time for a new leader, one who lives by the tenets of the Chevalier's Code, to make Orlais strong again.

Briala has been Celene's handmaid since the two of them were children, subtly using her position to help improve the lives of elves across Orlais. She is Celene's confidante, spymaster, and lover, but when politics force the empress to choose between the rights of the elves and the Orlesian throne, Briala must decide where her true loyalties lie.

An incredible prelude to Dragon Age Inquisition and Tresspaseer

If you love elf characters, dragon age lore, schemey politics, and an excellently paced book, look no further. This book is everything I could want in a dragon age book.

Excellent back story for Brianna and Celene!

Had I heard this story before playing the Winter Palace DLC I would have made very different choices in the gameplay!

Pretty good

The narrator has done a previous title but struggled a lot in this one as far as consistency with names but still good with providing the voices needed to the characters.
The plot is not as exciting as previous books. It'll be interesting to fans but because it has a lot of background that's missing from the games.

Good story, bad narration.

While the narrator did an overall good job, he frequently mispronounced words he previously pronounced properly.

A Kingdom of Intrigue

You dont need to have played the games to understand the story, though if you have it is all the more sweeter.

Political and social intrigue with a mask of war and (if you’ve played the games) foreshadowing of current and future events in the series.

Overall amazing, even if it does drag a few things at times. Recommend.

Beneath The Mask hides the story

Sometimes the mask does not hide the deeds of Deceit and which we commit in life or the politics of power
