Gogols Erzählung vermischt reale Alltäglichkeiten mit absurder Komik. Nichts scheint zunächst in dieser Geschichte zu stimmen, und doch stimmt alles: Der Barbier Iwan Jakowlewitsch findet beim Frühstück in seinem Brot eine Nase, die dem 37-jährigen Kollegienassessor Kowaljow gehört, den er immer mittwochs und sonntags rasiert. Voller Angst verpackt er die Nase in ein Papier und wirft sie von einer Brücke in die Newa. Entsprechend stellt jener Kowaljow beim Erwachen fest, dass ihm seine Nase fehlt. Als er sich deswegen auf den Weg macht, um dies beim Polizeipräfekten zu melden, begegnet ihm unterwegs in der Uniform eines Staatsrates seine eigene Nase.
Er verfolgt sie fassungslos, spricht sie an, wird aber von ihr abgewiesen. Den Polizeipräfekten trifft er nicht an, ein Zeitungsredakteur lehnt eine Suchanzeige über die Nase ab. Kowaljow kehrt ratlos nach Hause zurück, als ihm gemeldet wird, dass die Nase in dem Augenblick, da sie den Postwagen nach Riga besteigen wollte, festgenommen worden sei, weil sie einen gefälschten Pass besitze. Der Polizist, der die Nase festgenommen hat, wickelt sie in ein Stück Papier und bringt sie Kowaljow. Die Freude ist aber nur von kurzer Dauer, denn die Nase will an ihrer alten Stelle nicht haften, alle Versuche schlagen fehl, auch ein Arzt kann nicht helfen. Inzwischen hat sich das Gerücht über eine Nase, die täglich auf dem Newski-Prospekt spazieren gehe, verbreitet. Aber eines Tages erwacht Kowaljow wieder mit seiner Nase im Gesicht, als ob nichts gewesen wäre.
Die beiden erzählten Episoden vom Verlust der Nase und ihrer Rückkehr zum rechtmäßigen Besitzer fügen sich nicht stringent aneinander, sie sind nur assoziativ miteinander verbunden, und doch stimmt am Ende der Geschichte wieder alles: Denn so unvermittelt die Nase eines Morgens verschwindet, so unvermittelt sitzt sie eines anderen Morgens wieder inmitten von Kowaljows Gesicht. Aber das Verwunderlichste an dieser Erzählung ist der Umstand, dass sich eigentlich niemand recht darüber wundert, dass eine Nase sprechen kann, dass sie verschwindet, wieder auftaucht und dazwischen draußen auf einem Prachtboulevard wie ein Mensch herumläuft. Gogols Erzählung ist die Vorwegnahme von Kafkas "Verwandlung", sie ist die Erfindung eines eigenen literarischen Genres.
