Widowed Lady Fieldhurst has spent the last 17 years avoiding Oliver, after one glorious night together. Her parents had already planned out her life - she was never to become Oliver's wife, despite their plans to run away. To protect her secret, she had to follow their wishes and marry the elderly earl they had chosen.

Frustrating story!

As much as I tried to relate to 19th century realities for women I could find no empathy for the woman in this story. She was as horrible character making bad decisions over and over. Oliver was equally frustrating with his steadfast clinging to her. The back and forth stories in different times was also frustrating. All in all not a winner!

A little drawn out but the still a good book

I really enjoy this author, and the characters that she creates, and the narrator does a fantastic job bringing the characters to life I am enjoying the series

Ridiculous heroine and clueless hero

This was the most frustrating, ridiculous storyline I have encountered in some time. It may have been the narrator, who was execrable by the way, but the heroine comes across as a dumb, senseless, directionless child who is a coward and only recourse of action is to beg to get what she wants. Oliver is an idiot. Why would he want someone who lies to him over and over again. He can’t seem to see her for who she is.

This one should go somewhere and think about what it has done.. lol. In the meantime, I look forward to the next story. I haven’t given up on this author yet. I actually liked the first book.

First book was amazing this one not so good

There are So many things wrong with the story and the narrator. Ellen the lead protagonist sounded old when she wasn’t that old if she would just use her regular narrating voice as the lead characters voice it would have sounded better but she used an old voice for the lead character that was unflattering . And she was so frustrating! (The lead caricature) When she had the chance to clear things up she NEVER did. And Arthur kept coming back even when he said it would be the last time. And honestly the love making was terrible. It was just an all around bad book her obstacles were all in her head. She was her biggest obstacle and people like that are frustrating not my kind of book because I don’t think there was ever any growth in her. She was like a victim ALL the time. Like she wanted to be interesting, when she was younger by wanting to meat new and interesting people but I feel like there was no real depth to her she was a simpering ninny. I don’t recommend this book at all. You are better off not hearing it. You save your self a credit and like 9 hours of your life not listening to it.
