Publisher's summary

From the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Reckoners series, the Mistborn trilogy, and the Stormlight Archive comes the third book in an epic series about a girl who will travel beyond the stars to save the world she loves from destruction.

Spensa’s life as a Defiant Defense Force pilot has been far from ordinary. She proved herself one of the best starfighters in the human enclave of Detritus, and she saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krell - the enigmatic alien species that has been holding them captive for decades. What’s more, she traveled light-years from home as an undercover spy to infiltrate the Superiority, where she learned of the galaxy beyond her small, desolate planet home.

Now, the Superiority - the governing galactic alliance bent on dominating all human life - has started a galaxy-wide war. And Spensa’s seen the weapons they plan to use to end it: the Delvers. Ancient, mysterious alien forces that can wipe out entire planetary systems in an instant. Spensa knows that no matter how many pilots the DDF has, there is no defeating this predator.

Except that Spensa is Cytonic. She faced down a Delver and saw something eerily familiar about it. And maybe, if she’s able to figure out what she is, she could be more than just another pilot in this unfolding war. She could save the galaxy.

The only way she can discover what she really is, though, is to leave behind all she knows and enter the Nowhere. A place from which few ever return.

To have courage means facing fear. And this mission is terrifying.

Wonderfully done!

Perfect continuation to the story that started it all. Sanderson does a great job of growing the galaxy and how we the audience perceive it as well as the nowhere subspace. This book introduces a slew of new characters as well as building on old ones, all the while staying true to who they've been the whole time, just broadening as people are want to do. The same light hearted feel and vibe stays true throughout, the characters have a playful humor to them without cheapening the plot or any story lines. This continues to be one solid series

Different from Skyward but Fantastic

This was something wonderful. I wanted it to follow closely the previous Skyward trajectory and it does…but in a different manner. For that reason, although it is always a page turner, it took me some time to fall in love. But it holds its own and then rockets to that rarest of all books, meaningful AND adventurous AND heart-fulfilling. I owe a debt of gratitude to all who helped Sanderson put out the audible. I could keep gushing, but just listen. You will be so glad you did.
Start this series from the beginning and listen to all the novellas too. Then let’s all wait with breathless anticipation for what is next.

Excellent series!

I continue to love this series. I don't know what doesn't quite get it to 5/5 for me, but 4.5/5 is how I feel. The story just keeps getting better! I'm less surprised there's another book. very excited and I also can't wait to dive into the novellas, which I somehow haven't done already. I continue to recommend this for scifi/fantasy fans. With that epic story obsession of Spensa's, I think this is a great series if you kind of like sci-fi but really fantasy is your thing, for that reason.

Absolutely Fantastic

My wife and I love this book (and series)! The story is fun and intriguing, but most importantly for us, the messages are powerful and meaningful. I’m grateful for books that prompt discussion and that inspire us to be part of a cause that is bigger than ourselves. This is a wonderful story about endurance, selflessness, the meaning of life/pain/joy, and adventure. Brandon Sanderson is a master!

An Interesting Installment

If a bit of a long winded, very slow moving one at times. A lot of good things do happen, exciting developments and plot twists... but there was a lot of unnecessary filler too. A lot of inner monolog about the books spanding question of courage and cowardice. I can appreciate that... but not when it's over the course of what felt like 6 or 7 hours of minimal actual progress or necessary storyline.

That said, it still has some fascinating developments and exciting moments. I think I enjoy the novellas more than Cytonic at this point, but it's still relevant

Pirate SciFi with some answers

Good addition. Pick it up and you won't be disappointed. Looking forward to the next installment.

Loved it, but understand those that didn't...

I get it...after 2 novels and 2 novella's we were all really looking forward to Spensa getting back to her planet and kicking some trash, but - as with a lot of Sanderson novels, it is all about growing into understanding. Understanding of ones powers and typically, with many of his hero characters, understanding powers yet to be unlocked. One negative review said that it didn't live up to LotR, in that the magic system changed to suit her needs - but i disagree. Spensa is growing and learning about herself and what powers she has the whole series and Skyward was a big leap forward in the whole scheme. I welcome her "diversion" and found it compelling and entertaining. I was hoping to get more from when she returned home, but i'm thinking that is what the next novella will cover possibly, but if not then book 4 for sure...

Wild Ride

The Third installment was a fascinating deep dive into the weird of the Skyward series. It's another excellent entry from Brandon Sanderson, and Suzy Jackson knocked the narration out of the park again!

didn't see that one coming

This was such a joy to read. I've never read sci-fi quite like this story.

Cytonic

I think that this is a excellent book building up Spence as a character and her ideology of life.
