Mario Mendoza comenzó su carrera literaria como cuentista y por primera vez sus lectores tendrán la oportunidad de tener en un solo volumen todos los textos de este género que ha escrito y publicado.
Sus primeros cuentos aparecieron reunidos en La travesía del vidente, obra con la que ganó el Premio Nacional de Literatura en 1995. En el de la odisea del patriarca Noé que le da título al libro, el de las aventuras infernales en Molokai o el que relata la historia del náufrago Alexander Selkirk, entre otros, resuenan las aventuras marinas narradas por Robert Louis Stevenson, Joseph Conrad y Edgar Allan Poe. Estos cuentos fueron la manera del autor de rendirle "un homenaje a la literatura del mar, en cuyas páginas me formé como lector, y más tarde como escritor neófito".
Años después, tras obtener el Premio Biblioteca Breve con la novela Satanás, el escritor bogotano publicó su segundo libro de cuentos: Una escalera al cielo. Los protagonistas de estos relatos son de nuevo viajeros, pero no de mares, sino de ciudades.
