I came across him in the Arizona desert many years ago. I was searching for gold up in the Superstition Mountains when he stumbled into my camp. He was very dehydrated and deranged; nevertheless, he knew a lot of facts and some strange tales of the old West, particularly Arizona.

I shared coffee and bean stew with Jim Silver Knife, and he told me his tale. Again, I reiterate, this is pure fiction. Or perhaps it may be embellished truth. He was gone when I awoke the next morning. I don’t know if what he told me was true. But he did leave me a heavy, baseball-size, solid gold nugget. It was wrapped in some light but strong leather membrane type of skin.
