Shakespeare se tornou o dramaturgo mais conhecido de todos os tempos por várias razões: era genial com as palavras, entendia a alma humana como ninguém e falava de temas universais. Além disso, apresentava seu teatro para todo tipo de gente, conseguindo entreter ao mesmo tempo nobres, artesãos, letrados e analfabetos. No entanto, parte de sua popularidade se deve aos irmãos Charles e Mary Lamb, que, ao adaptarem vinte peças para o formato de conto, tornaram as histórias do autor inglês acessíveis a pessoas de diferentes idades e gêneros, em diversas partes do mundo.
Publicados em 1807, os contos dos Lamb eram destinados apenas ao público infantojuvenil e jovens senhoras - para quem as peças originais não eram recomendadas devido à dificuldade da língua e ao teor erótico -, mas agradaram também aos adultos e alcançaram enorme sucesso. Com o apogeu do império britânico, a coletânea atravessou os mares, chegou aos quatro cantos do globo e ganhou versões em chinês, japonês, hindi e em muitas outras línguas. Foi assim, por exemplo, que o Oriente entrou em contato com as peças do bardo.
Charles (1775-1834) e Mary (1764-1847) eram profundos conhecedores da obra de Shakespeare e acreditavam que a leitura deveria levar o jovem a sonhar, e não apenas incentivar as boas maneiras e os princípios elevados, como ensinavam os textos infantojuvenis da época. Charles adaptou seis peças - O rei Lear, Macbeth, Hamlet, Otelo, Romeu e Julieta e Timão de Atenas -, enquanto Mary cuidou dos textos restantes. Na primeira edição, apenas o nome de Charles apareceu na capa, apesar de os amigos saberem que Mary tinha feito a maior parte do trabalho.
No Brasil, o livro dos irmãos Lamb só chegou em 1920. Em 1943, a então Editora Globo de Porto Alegre (depois Globo Livros) publicou pela primeira vez a tradução irretocável de Mario Quintana, que nunca deixou de ser reeditada, passando apenas por atualizações ortográficas.
Até hoje, a coletânea Contos de Shakespeare é reconhecida como uma excelente introdução ao teatro shakespeariano para o público geral. Agora, a nova edição deste clássico ganhou ilustrações de Weberson Santiago, nova capa, novo projeto gráfico, prefácio inédito e texto de orelha de John Milton, especialista em Shakespeare, professor titular em Estudos da Tradução da USP.
