Al igual que ocurre con la vida de Goethe, su biografía se podría dividir en dos épocas muy marcadas: una juventud nerviosa, sensible y arrogante, con dificultades para encontrar el equilibrio entre la razón y el temperamento, y una madurez donde la escritora, pensadora y activista se atrevería a grandes cosas.
Su matrimonio la ayudó a canalizar su extraordinario vitalismo, pero la muerte temprana de su marido potenció las sombras que viajaban con ella: un íntimo sentimiento de desdicha que Arenal proyectaría en el mundo que la rodeaba.
