Many of the clients who end up in our respective therapist offices thought they were doing relationships right—avoiding the white picket fence, focusing on careers and experiences over babies and legally-binding documents, choosing someone after they “found themselves” first. However, like clockwork, around their early to mid-thirties, these clients show up at our door. Why? For the first time, they realize that they dislike their relationship and are frustrated by their partner but know that another break-up won’t fix things.

Raised in a home where food was unstable and anger was the norm, Nicole learned early that she needed to take charge of her own safety and security. So she did: She got into an elite private school by talking to a stranger in her dad’s cab, she strategized her way onto Wheel of Fortune to pay for college, she adopted three girls after meeting their mother panhandling, she quit her job to launch her own business, and she struggled.

Publisher's summary
One flicker of hope. That’s all it takes to catapult yourself into the life you’ve always imagined.
Success is not born out of skill, school, where we’re from, who we know, or what we scored on the SAT. None of us were born ready. None of us started life knowing how to fly a plane or launch a company or knit a sweater for our dog.
But we are born with something more important than skills. We’re born with optimism—the initial seed for success. Optimism fuels the belief that you can be the one to create the good the world needs. But you’ve got to hone it. And practice it. And determine to live from it.
In Chasing the Bright Side, Jess Ekstrom shares her own inspirational story of how optimism helped her overcome multiple challenges, and the dynamic ways her mindset propelled her as a young entrepreneur, international speaker, and philanthropist.
Do you have dreams for yourself and the world that are tucked away in your box of somedays? What would happen if today was the day you opened the box? And what if that box was the key to a better tomorrow?
Jess' journey will inspire you embrace the power of optimism in your own life, and help you reimagine your purpose so you create good in the world while fulfilling your own dreams—right where you are.

Critic reviews
"Chasing the Bright Side is essential reading for anyone facing a challenge, in work or in life. With emotion, humility, and humor (and some amazing stories), Jess Ekstrom not only demonstrates how anyone with a dream can eventually persevere, but also shows by example how we all can tap into the passion to do so. It's the book I wish I had read before starting my own entrepreneurial journey, but luckily it's not too late for everyone else. I'll be recommending this book to my own children, to the aspiring entrepreneurs I work with, and to everyone I meet who aspires to find more purpose in their life. It's a page-turner that you won't be able to put down until you've finished but holds lessons that will reveal themselves to you for a lifetime." Marc Randolph, Netflix cofounder and first CEO
"Optimism is never accidental. Jess Ekstrom knows this better than anyone. I love that she's given practical, encouraging, empowering steps to discovering what it takes to lead with optimism. Read this today if you want to change your tomorrow." Jon Acuff, New York Times bestselling author of Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done
"'Optimism is a daily choice. It's not naive or Pollyanna; it's a foundation for success in life. In Chasing the Bright Side, Jess Ekstrom will motivate you see your challenges as opportunities to learn and grow and believe the best is yet to come. Every day you can focus on being positive, working hard, and making others around you better, and Jess's inspiring message will help you get there." Jon Gordon, bestselling author of The Energy Bus and The Power of Positive Leadership

According to Blanke, our lives are so filled with junk from the past--from dried up tubes of crazy glue to old grudges--that's it's a wonder we can get up in the morning, never mind go to work, care for our children and parents, and just put one foot in front of the other. Blanke wants to start a movement of people across America throwing out 50 things (magazines count as one!) that will help liberate us from the stuff - both physical and mental - that clutters our lives.

Let’s face it: we all want a seat at the cool table, a great job, and loads of money. But most of us won’t be able to achieve this widely accepted, black-or-white, definition of winning, which makes us feel like failures, that we’re destined to a life of loserdom. That’s the conventional wisdom. It’s also crap, according to comedian and cult hero Chris Gethard, who knows a thing of two about losing. Failing is an art form, he argues; in fact, it’s the only the way we’re ever going to discover who we are, what we really want, and how to live the kind of life we only dreamed about.

In The Spark Factor, Dr. Molly Maloof shares a program uniquely tailored to the biology of women—a plan that targets the mitochondria, the power source of the cells. As Dr. Maloof shows, the intense, all-or-nothing approaches commonly used by biohackers to optimize health—including sustained fasting, ultra-low-carb diets, and intense training—can be harmful, especially for women, because they create excessive stress in an already-stressed body, which can make us tired, weak, and prone to illness.

One of the very best scientific predictors for how any child turns out - in terms of happiness, academic success, leadership skills, and meaningful relationships - is whether at least one adult in their life has consistently shown up for them. In an age of scheduling demands and digital distractions, showing up for your child might sound like a tall order. But as best-selling authors Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson reassuringly explain, it doesn’t take a lot of time, energy, or money. Instead, showing up means offering a quality of presence.

Are you above average? Is your child an A student? Is your employee an introvert or an extrovert? Every day we are measured against the yardstick of averages, judged according to how close we come to it or how far we deviate from it. The assumption that metrics comparing us to an average—like GPAs, personality test results, and performance review ratings—reveal something meaningful about our potential is so ingrained in our consciousness that we don't even question it. That assumption, says Harvard's Todd Rose, is spectacularly—and scientifically—wrong.

All you need is a dream & courage to succeed!
I'm on my 2nd time listening to "Chasing the Bright Side". Out of all the self helps I've listened to this one stood out as the most relatable! It gave me so much confidence and made me realize that I don't have to have all the answers. I can figure it out as I go along. I was always that person who thought different and was teased and talked about you know "she think she better" so I dimmed my light for a long time to make other ppl comfortable. Thank you Jess for taking the time to put your thoughts and experiences into the book/audioable 💕

Smiles, Tears, and Laughs
This book was everything and more. The writer pulls you during her story and helps you visualize her experiences in a way that makes you feel like you're there. I laughed, cried, and really dug deep within myself when listening. I've been telling everyone about this story and how impactful it is. I love that the writer narrates her own book. I wish I could listen to her read more.

Get inspired and take action with your own story!
This is hands down one of my favorite books of all time. I finished it this morning, and enjoyed tons of laughter, a-ha like insights, and a few tears. Jess truly brings you into her experiences in a way that you can relate to - I had several moments of “I hear ya girl”, as I devoured the pages. The Take it or Leave it sections at the end of each chapter really help us to reflect on our own lives, and inspire us to take action. I will be gifting this book to tons of friends... and I feel it is the perfect gift for anyone needing a ‘cheer me up’, and kids graduating from high school and college too - I smile at the thought of everyone having a chance to read this book (and at the fact that I am going to read it over again - there are so many great messages)! So grateful 😊

I love this book and highly recommend it. The author is amazing and really relatable. I felt as if we were sitting in a coffee shop just chatting, like we were best friends.
If you are looking for a book to add to your personal development tool box, this one is a must have. I felt all the emotions with this one.
Really hoping for another book.

Raw honesty and a heavy dose of encouragement!
Jess is a fantastic storyteller - incorporating her personal sense of humor and a raw honesty about her experiences as an entrepreneur. As someone getting her own business off the ground, I felt empowered to tackle even the potholes in the road, because Jess displays humility in a way that's encouraging to the reader.
This book is the perfect gift for start-up owners and people in need of a few good laughs. You'll feel like Jess is your best friend by the end of the book!

This book is great! Filled with moments of tears and laughs and encouragement and real emotions. Besides the numerous quotes, I found myself taking notes and replaying to hear stories again and again. I strongly recommend this book!
