Publisher's summary

An asylum is a prison, a state of isolation of the mind, and the body. It is where one goes to think; to be incarcerated. An asylum is a place to forget and to be forgotten. It is a haven, as well as a nightmare, both physical and mental.

James Callaway found himself in just this kind of place. He has no idea who put him here, or why. All he knows for certain is that he needs to escape if he wants to see his family again.

Comatose

This is definitely a physiological horror story even though a bit confusing a couple of times. There are sexual situation and violence with an ending that brings it together about what goes on in James’ brain. Asylum review

I actually liked this up until near the end. Have heard the conclusion in various stories previously. Still all right, and would listen/read to more from the author.

Disturbing

James wakes up in an asylum not knowing why he is there or who put him there. He witnesses terrible and disturbing things that make him worry about what happened to his own family.

This book was intensely disturbing. While the general storyline was good, there were some explicit scenes that would make anyone nauseated. This book is definitely not for sensitive listeners. One thing I didn't enjoy about the author was that I felt that some obvious things were stated that didn't need to be. For instance, when a character would state that they are doing x, there would be a repetition stating that the character was doing x. It was unnecessary and made the dialogue weird. Nevertheless, despite the crude and vile scenes, the story was good and I liked the ending.

The narrator in this story was brilliant. He made you connect with the characters and added various emotions to his performance. The narrator was what got this book more stars for me.

Note: this book was given to me at my request and I have left this objective review voluntarily.

A Gritty Horror Story You Should Read!

*This book was given to me by the author at my request, and I provided this voluntary, unbiased review.*

3.9/5

The synopsis of the book had me hooked right away... Then came to actually listening to the audiobook. I first want to start by separating the audible presentation separate from the story itself, because I believe that the performance hurt this..a lot. The pronunciations and inflections of every sentence absolutely bothered me. David Philip Reed has an excellent voice for horror, but I could just not get around *how* he spoke a good portion of this book.

Now to the meat of it - the story. I'll start with the negative to get that out of the way. There was a heck of a ton of telling and not showing. Sure, a common thing for writers out there, so not a big deal. Another big thing for me was the spoken out loud inner dialogue. I did not feel it spoke of how someone would truly say those things -- it sounded a bit scripted/robotic. It definitely threw me off a bit, but I ground through it anyway.

Now to the good - the story concept itself: AWESOME! There are definitely versions of this "type" of story out there in the ether, but I thought Rome absolutely hit a home run with this. It's dark, gritty, gruesome, and makes you cringe with horror! The execution was done really well, and I was very satisfied with the ending; mostly because I thought I had it figured out and BAM! Rome hit me with a nice shock that left me going "you got me good!"

At the end of day, I thought this was an excellent story that I believe could be a real winner with some editorial fixes. I would recommend reading this via kindle/paper rather than Audiobook, but that's just my two cents.

Frightening

All I can say is WOW. And with an ending I never saw coming.

The narration was fantastic. with actual screams moans and sounds that belong to the bump in the night noises.
